The third time's the charm for Malin Akerman and Bradley Whitford in the brand-new ABC show Trophy Wife, and Malin tells ET that the premise for the new dysfunctional family comedy is extremely rich in source material.

PICS: Hollywood's Hottest Bikini Bods!

"We have such a great team of writers," says Malin. "We have so much good fodder for this show because there's so many different elements and so many different characters. So, I think we've got a good thing going on."

In Trophy Wife, Malin plays Kate, a reformed party girl who literally falls into the arms of Pete (Whitford) at a karaoke bar and then falls in love. One year later, she's Pete's third wife, and has inherited an insta-family complete with three stepchildren and two ex-wives. Cue the situation comedy!

Ex-wife No. 1 is Diane (Marcia Gay Harden), an intense, over-achieving doctor and the mother of twin teenagers Hillary (Bailee Madison) and Warren (Ryan Scott Lee). Ex-wife No. 2 is the new-agey Jackie (Michaela Watkins), who is mother to adopted son Bert (Albert Tsai). Of course, neither ex is especially approving of Kate's minimal maternal instinct. Good thing she's got her party-hearty singleton best friend Meg (Natalie Morales) to lean on!
