First Trailer: Jonathan Groff is 'Looking'

While Jonathan Groff welcomes the comparisons, the first trailer for his new HBO series, Looking, makes it clear that this is not just "The Gay Girls."

"I think the thing we have in common with Girls is that there's a realistic quality to the show and how it depicts relationships," Groff told ETonline earlier this year. "But it's not a snappy comedy; it's much more of a slow burn. Tonally it's more similar to Andrew Haigh's film Weekend."

For those unfamiliar with Weekend, Haigh (who also created Looking) crafted a heart-wrenching portrait of a hookup turned serious over the course of one long weekend. And as you can see in the trailer, Haigh looks to bring that unflinching approach to sexuality to television with the series, co-starring Frankie J. Alvarez, Murray Bartlett, Russell Tovey and Scott Bakula.

Looking
premieres January 19 on HBO.
