CBS's Mom is a show about addiction, financial woes, teen pregnancy and troubled relationships, and through all of those delicate and tough situations, the writers and cast of the young sitcom manage to find the humor in the darkness.

The show follows Christy, played by Anna Faris, who is a recovering addict who goes to live with her mother, also a recovering addict, to try to get her life on track and reconnect with her troubled mom.

Christy also has a teenage daughter, who had gotten pregnant around the same age Christy had gotten pregnant with her.

One episode that showcases the program's ability to juggle the comedy and tragedy of a troubled life is the upcoming Zombies and Cobb Salad, airing Monday, November 18. In the episode, Christy's mom Bonnie (played by Alison Janney), falls off the wagon and goes on a bender, leaving her at risk of abandoning her recovery and going back to a life of addiction.

Christy decides to do everything she can to help get her mom back on track, and enlists the help of some friends from their twelve-step program, including Marjorie, played by Mimi Kennedy, and Regina, played by Oscar winner Octavia Spencer.

The cast of Mom spoke to ET during a visit to the set about what it's like working on a show that deals with such controversial topics, and on the powerful episode in which Bonnie goes on a bender.

"It's an extraordinary episode," Janney told ET. "To get to have a moment for Bonnie where she really admits for the first time that she wasn't such a good mom. It's a really sweet, tender, heart wrenching moment, that I get to share."

"She is unbelievable," said show creator Chuck Lorre of Janney's performance in the upcoming episode. "There is broad comedy in this episode, where it's just over the top and crazy, and there are moments that just break your heart. She can do it all. It's really quite a tour de force… I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it, and I've been doing this a long time."
