Gosselin Twins Go Silent In Awkward TV Interview

January 16, 2014

In their first-ever live TV interview, Jon and Kate Gosselin's twins Mady and Cara initially clammed up on camera when asked how they are doing and deferred to their mother for answers.

Appearing Thursday on the Today show, the 13-year-old sisters were at first silent when asked by co-host Savannah Guthrie how they and the rest of the family are doing in their post-reality show lives -- and instead just looked at their mother and each other. The still refrained from speaking even after being prompted by Kate, who said, "It's your chance, spit it out."

Their mother added that she was surprised at their "wordless" reaction on the show. "I don't want to speak for them but, Mady, go ahead. Sort of the things that you said in (People) magazine, that years later they're good, they're fine. Go for it, it's your chance," she said. Kate and the girls were recently featured in a cover story on People in which they gave an update on how they're doing. Following Kate's response, Mady turns to her mother and replies, "No, you just said it."

While they remained shy about speaking through the entire interview, Mady did answer when asked whether or not she thinks the public has formulated the wrong impression of her and her family. "I wouldn't say wrong. I would just say not the full story," she said. "A lot of people think that filming our show has damaged us, but it’s only really helped."

For her part, Kate reiterated the point she's recently been making about her children in interviews and on her personal blog. "They get really frustrated that people assume certain things in our house and they always say, 'But that's not how it is, mommy. Why do they say that about us?'" she said. "They're just really regular, every day, awesome teenagers."

After the appearance, Kate tweeted about the interview segment, "Thanks to @TODAYshow for having Cara, Mady and me on the show today! 1st live interview can render even the gabbiest girls speechless :)"

The twins' father Jon also issued a statement on the Today interview: "I just feel horrible for my twins. You would only know as a parent. I wish I could've rescued them...I only knew they were doing Today early this morning. It looked like the twins had a moral dilemma, 'Are we supposed to say it now? Or Maybe we shouldn't say that.' I'm here for them, I love them. They could call me with anything in the world. When I see them for custody next week I'm [going to] hug them. I'm going to be a parent first. Why were they on Today show? They were just in People magazine."
