ET caught up with CBS President and CEO Leslie Moonves at The Hollywood Reporter's annual 35 Most Powerful People in Media Cocktail Reception Wednesday, when he dished on Stephen Colbert's highly anticipated appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman next Tuesday, April 22.
The Colbert Report star, 49, will be replacing Late Show legend David Letterman, 67, when he retires next year.
"It's going to be the first time he's speaking publicly since he got the gig, so it's sort of appropriate that David has him first," Moonves told ET. "As you all know, David blessed this, and thought it was a great idea that Stephen be his replacement, so it's gonna be a fun show on Tuesday."
"Stephen has always been a real friend to me. I'm very excited for him, and I'm flattered that CBS chose him," Letterman said in a statement last Thursday when the news of his replacement broke. "I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses."
And the love is clearly mutual.
"Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career," Colbert said in a statement. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead. I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."
