Stephen Colbert Tells David Letterman His Plan for 'Late Show'

Stephen Colbert appeared on Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday for the first time since being named Letterman's heir to the CBS late-night show.

Judging by his interview, Colbert's transition should be a smooth one. As a matter of fact, if the 49-year-old Colbert Report host has his way, fans might not even notice the change.

"I'm going to do whatever you have done," Colbert joked. "It seems to have gone pretty well, Dave."

Dave urged against that plan, joking that his tenure may have gone on too long.

Colbert also revealed that this isn't the first time he's applied for a job with the Late Show. Back in the mid '80s, the comedian tried to land an internship. "The next job I'm taking here, it pays right?" Colbert asked. "Because I've already signed."

He also revealed a Top 10 list that he'd submitted to the show when he applied to be a staff writer in 1997. Upon presenting the "Top 10 cocktails for Santa," band leader Paul Shaffer had special music for Colbert. "He doesn't get that yet! He doesn't have the job yet! What are you doing over there!? Good heavens! Don't let the door hit you in the ass…" Letterman, 67, exclaimed.

Earlier this month, CBS announced that Colbert -- host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report -- would be succeeding Letterman on Late Show when the longtime TV personality retires sometime in 2015.
