Meet the Cast of Colorful Characters in 'Penny Dreadful'

By

Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Timothy Dalton introduce ET to their Penny Dreadful personas.

An American gunslinger, an English explorer and an iron-willed woman of strength and secrets are hunting down supernatural, deadly characters, ripped from the pages of classic literature, who stalk the streets of London. This is what Showtime's exciting and frightening new series Penny Dreadful is all about, and with the cast they've assembled, they mean business.

Lead by Harnett, Dalton and Green, the show is a fascinating and complex re-imagining of the origin stories behind some of the biggest names in classic horror, such as Dorian Gray, Dr. Victor Frankenstein and even characters from the iconic horror story Dracula.

ET chatted with the stars of the new show at The Highline Hotel in New York City, where they revealed a little more about the characters they play.

In Penny Dreadful, Hartnett, who hasn't worked in television since 1999 when he played a 17-year-old on the crime drama series Cracker: Mind Over Murder, plays the show's charming American, Ethan Chandler. "He's the only American among the bunch," the 35-year-old actor explained. "And he is oddly sticking around in London after he finds out about a lot of supernatural stuff, so it raises a lot of questions about either his sanity or his motives."

Chandler teams up with the rebellious and self-possessed Vanessa Ives (Green), and Sir Malcolm Murray (Dalton), an Englishman and famous African Explorer who is searching for his missing daughter.
