'Lion King' Sequel Coming Soon to Small Screen

Disney is bringing The Lion King to a new generation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney Junior has ordered an animated sequel TV movie and series called The Lion Guard. The news source reports that the movie will debut on the cable network in 2015 with the series premiering the following year.

The voice cast has not been announced as of yet, but THR reports that the story follows the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, Kion, who becomes the leader of those responsible for preserving the Pride Lands. This group of the bravest and brightest is called the Lion Guard.

Despite the name given to this band of watchdogs, Kion bucks tradition, choosing some of his most loyal non-lion friends to serve in the Lion Guard.

The Lion King has grossed $987.4 million worldwide. This year marks the film's 20th anniversary, which will be celebrated with a special edition soundtrack delving into the stories behind the songs. The soundtrack will be available June 24.
