For many years, television was something most movie stars would never do. But with larger and larger budgets, a wider market with many channels – and original programming on the internet – more big time stars than ever are finding their way to the small screen.

Now, with this year's round of Primetime Emmy nominations, it seems to be paying off for them.

From Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey and his performance in True Detective to Oscar-winner Julia Roberts and her powerful role in The Normal Heart, more A-listers than ever before are finding passion projects on TV, and getting Emmy nominations for their efforts.
