NEWS: 'PLL' Boss Spills on Tonight's 'Emotionally Challenging' Death

Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish)!

That's right, the former queen bee-turned-manipulative mastermind was murdered in the final few minutes of tonight's fatal finale, and although we are absolutely devastated to see Mona go, we have to admit... that was a an amAzing finale!

PLL
's Marlene King previously revealed to ETonline that although this was an "emotionally challenging" episode for her to write, it "needed to be done." "I want fans to know that the decision to tell this story was made a long time ago," the showrunner explained. "I think sometimes these episodes are promoted for the shock value, like 'Oh my gosh all of the sudden someone's going to die!' But I don’t want people to think that this was haphazard in any way."

Not to worry, little liars, King dished that like all of PLL's most shocking moments, Mona's death is a part of a much greater picture. "We weren’t spinning the dial and saying, 'Okay it landed on that person, time for them to die!' It was nothing like that," she said. "This story point came to us over a year ago and it felt like it was a very important part of the big Pretty Little Liars story that we needed to tell."

So what was the decision for killing off this character in particular? King teased, "The answer to that question will unfold as to story moves forward." (Better start throwing our your guesses now!)
