Does newcomer Alexandra Shipp have what it takes to pull off the late R&B singer Aaliyah's moves?

Lifetime's upcoming original made-for-TV movie Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B may have had its share of obstacles during production, but the network released this incredibly short teaser over the weekend. In the 16-second snippet, we see the Nickelodeon star dancing while donning Aaliyah's trademark crop top and baggy pants -- and that's all we get!

The biopic is based on the book Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, a biography from author Christopher Farley.

It follows Aaliyah's life, from the time she appeared on Star Search at age 10, to the height of her career, when her life was cut short in a tragic plane crash at the age of 22.

Disney star Zendaya Coleman had originally been cast by Lifetime to play the title role, but the actress backed out days after the announcement was made. Many attribute the decision to strong disapproval from Aaliyah fans.
