'Chasing Life': Italia Ricci Talks 'Heartbreaking' Moments Ahead For April's Love Life

The tear-jerking series returns tonight at 9 p.m. and we're bracing for a roller-coaster ride of emotions.

Grab some tissues, and your best friends because ABC Family's most compelling drama is back with a brand-new batch of episodes.

Chasing Life stole our hearts last summer when we met April Carver — an ambitious 20-something whose life was ripped out from under her when she discovered she had leukemia. Now, the tear-jerking series returns tonight at 9 p.m., and after chatting with leading lady Italia Ricci, we're bracing for a roller-coaster ride of emotions.

First up, the good news: When we first meet back up with April, fans will discover that her intense round of chemotherapy did the trick, and our heroine is cancer-free, but certainly not carefree.

"The paranoia of [the cancer] is going to come back," Ricci revealed to ETonline. "Her world changed on a dime, and that could happen for anyone, at any point — but her odds are higher now, and she's terrified."

The 28-year-old actress continued, "That takes a toll on her mentally, both at work and when she's trying to live her life. You'll see her trying to figure out how to deal with that constant worry of [the cancer] coming back and her relapsing."

With the approval of her doctor, April will dive right back into her job at the newspaper, and try her hardest to forget about her health-scare hiatus. However, the lingering side-effects of chemo are not exactly the best assets for a budding journalist in a busy city.

"The chemo has left April with a few physical setbacks like not being able to walk that fast," she explained. "Also her memory is sort of gone because chemo-brain happens to some people and she has trouble remembering things -- and that's really not a great thing for a reporter."

But the one thing that April could never forget? How devastating things will be when she sees Dominic (Richard Brancatisano) for the first time since he broke up with her in the hospital.

"It's heartbreaking," Ricci confessed. "I remember feeling really bad after the scene because she doesn't know what to do. She doesn't know if she made the biggest mistake of her life and she doesn't know if she wants to be with him again."

Although April would love for the twosome to restart with a "clean slate," Dominic is not exactly on the same page in the breakup handbook. "He's very resistant to that and you see how heartbroken he is," she said.

And now for the bad news: When we last saw Leo (Scott Michael Foster), he decided to go through with the brain surgery and when he was in the operation room it appeared that something had gone wrong. We begged and pleaded with Ricci to give us the status on Leo's health, but this is all she would say…

"I can tell you that you're going to meet some new people and you're going to say goodbye to some people that you've gotten to know," Ricci said and later added, "April gets a boyfriend this winter season."

Chasing Life's winter premiere airs tonight at 9 p.m. on ABC Family.
