American Horror Story: Being on the Receiving End of Jessica Lange’s Shade.
Unfortunately, we won’t be watching that show this year; we’re getting AHS: Hotel instead. But Jessica Lange teased what the former could have been during Paleyfest’s Freak Show panel, when asked if Lady Gaga joining the cast had made her reconsider retiring.
Gawker’s Rich Juzwiak was the first to point this moment out, what he calls a “masterwork” in “shade, shade, and more shade.” The question comes from a fan and, while clumsily worded -- “Does Gaga convince you to stay for another season?” Lange is certainly smart enough to deduce what it means.
It only gets better from there: She basically goes full Lucille Bluth, before licking her lips and saying, “No, you know-- When, um-- Well.” And then she just giggles.
You can watch the entire ordeal go down here (fast forward to 42:30):
Is this more brutal than that time she shaded Lea Michele by completely ignoring her on the red carpet? All hail the true Supreme!
For the record, the answer is no. Lange won’t be staying on the series.
"We've had a great run here," she said earlier in the panel. "I have absolutely loved doing these four characters that I've had the opportunity to play. And in all the madness, I have loved my writers and the actors and Ryan [Murphy] and the whole insanity of it...But yes, I'm done."
Matt Bomer, Wes Bentley, and former Glee star Cheyenne Jackson will join Gaga instead, while regulars like Sarah Paulson, who is heading to American Crime Story, and Emma Roberts, who will star on Scream Queens, are still up in the air.
