The 21-year-old pop star, whose new single "What Do You Mean?" recently hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, was in top form when it came to being an engaging, entertaining late-night talk show guest.

Eager to please fans and have a good time, Justin did just that -- and seemed like a truly changed man. Here are seven moments from his Tonight Show appearance that made us like him all over again.

1. Justin Got Deep About Emotional VMA Performance

Justin took to the stage during the MTV VMAs for his first awards show performance in more than two years, where he got choked up and cried toward the end of his number.

Addressing the emotional performance, Justin said, "It was just so overwhelming for me."

"I just wasn't expecting [the audience] to support me in the way that they did," Justin explained, having to take a breath to keep from getting emotional recalling the performance. "Last time I was at an awards show I was booed."

2. Justin Opened Up About His Growth as a Person and Artist

"I've worked so hard at this album, I've worked so hard at just becoming the man I want to become," Justin told Jimmy of his upcoming fifth album.

He also talked broadly about the high-profile mistakes from his past, explaining, "What it was is that I just had a bunch of knuckleheads around me. That was pretty much it. And it's never good to have knuckleheads around."

"I just went through a place of trying to figure it out," Justin added. "You have to figure out what you're OK with and what you're not OK with, but you have to test the waters. I just happened to be in the spotlight, in front of cameras all the time, and they caught all those moments.”

3. Justin Blends in With the Crowd

NBC

In the beginning of the episode, Jimmy went out into the crowd for a segment with the audience. After speaking with some random audience members, he came up to Justin, decked out in his camo jacket, and asked some "hard-hitting" questions.

If Justin had a TV show about his life, what would it be called? "Just Trying to Make It." And who would play Justin? Tyler Perry, obviously.

4. Justin Forgets Album Release Date

They say to err is human, so sometimes it's endearing when a star makes an honest mistake. Like when Justin, who came to promote his upcoming album, totally forgot its release date.

"We don't know when the album's gonna drop, but we heard that you might have an exclusive thing to tell us?" Jimmy prompted Justin during their sit-down interview.

"I do...," Justin said hesitantly, rubbing his chin in embarrassment. "But I forget the date."

Luckily, Jimmy had it written down for him. The new album drops Nov. 13.

5. Justin Goes Country

Jimmy busted out a mic for Justin and put him on the spot asking the Biebs to sing a country version of "Where Are U Now," which Justin had jokingly performed during rehearsal.

To his credit, even with a strong Southern twang, the song is still catchy as hell.

6. Justin Has a Drum-Off Rematch With Questlove!

In 2010, Justin and The Roots' Questlove had a drum-off in which Justin was total destroyed. Five years later, it's a completely different story!

Going head to head on drums, the two exchanged skillful rounds of impressive drumming, but Justin saved the best for last blowing the competition out of the water. Even Questlove had to admit Justin’s set was solid.

7. Justin Bieber Performs With a Little Help From The Roots

At the end of the night, Justin finally took the stage to perform "What Do You Mean?" backed by The Roots, and it’s clear that even when he's on a small stage he can still deliver the kind of performance meant for an arena.
