Hoechlin, 28, will first don the cape in the first two episodes of The CW superhero drama’s second season. Superman will be seen visiting his cousin, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), in National City.

"Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said in a statement. “We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character."

Superman appeared as a faceless figure in Supergirl’s first episode and has made brief cameos in a handful of episodes. A younger version of Supergirl’s famous cousin also appeared in a season one sequence.

The show has also employed several Superman alums, recruiting Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) and Helen Slater (Supergirl, Smallville) as Kara’s adoptive parents.

Back in March, Supergirl executive producer Ali Adler played coy when ET asked about the prospects of Superman becoming a more significant presence on the show, instead directing focus to Kara’s journey.

“I think for us it’s really about exploring her world and he does of course touch her world, but it’s really about her super experience,” Adler said at the time.

Supergirl
will air Mondays at 8 p.m. PT/ET this fall on The CW.
