Who will take on the voice of Ariel?

Ready to go "under the sea"?

ABC is jumping into the live musical game with a animated/live-action hybrid production of the Disney classic, The Little Mermaid, the network announced Tuesday.

In the two-hour event, ABC plans to take the 1989 animated feature film, which centers on Ariel, a young mermaid who trades in her voice to be human, and intertwining it with live musical performances through "cutting-edge technology" for its first live musical.

It's an ambitious choice, to be sure. But we simply can't wait to see who will be slipping into Ariel's mermaid fin or making girls swoon as Prince Eric.

A cast of "celebrity artists" will be announced soon, whose performances will be weaved in throughout the animated film.

A performance of this ilk has actually been done before with The Little Mermaid. Last summer, an all-star cast led by Sara Bareilles and Darren Criss performed songs from the film for a handful of special concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, while the original film played on the big screen.

Live musicals continue to be all the rage for the broadcast networks, as Fox recently announced it will be bringing productions of Rent and A Christmas Story to the small screen and NBC will be debuting Jesus Christ Superstar.
