Fitz lives!

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’sresident engineering genius finally made his first season five appearance at the end of Friday’s all-new episode -- but the shocking reveal may have left fans with more questions than it answered.

After Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) was, mysteriously, the only agent in the group not taken hostage and transported to the future in the season five premiere, the team has had no contact with him beyond a tattered postcard assuring them he was “working on it.”

That is, until a masked stranger showed up at a swanky event hosted by the Lighthouse’s Kree ruler, Kasius (Dominic Rains), where the space station’s most “impressive” Inhumans were to be put on display and auctioned off to the highest bidder. The centerpiece of the showcase was to be the recently captured Daisy (Chloe Bennet), or, as she’s known in this future -- where the Earth has been blown to bits -- “Quake, Destroyer of Worlds.”

Just as Kasius was ready to begin the demonstration, however, the stranger interrupted.

“Forget your exhibition. She’s the Destroyer of Worlds,” he said, taking off his mask to reveal the S.H.I.E.L.D. engineer. “She should fight to the death.”

So, phew, Fitz is alive, and he’s in the future -- but what does it all mean? How did he get here? Will he be able to save Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) from servitude under Kasius, and why is he seemingly trying to doom Daisy? Some answers will likely be revealed next week as yet another member of the S.H.I.E.L.D. family makes a return to the series. Nick Blood will reprise his role as Agent Lance Hunter in the episode, titled “Rewind,” which explores Fitz’s incredible journey to find his teammates.

ET recently spoke with S.H.I.E.L.D. star Henry Simmons, who gushed about having Blood back in the ranks for the guest-starring appearance.

“Nick is one of the people I hold in the highest esteem in my life... He’s one of the best people you will ever know,” Simmons raved. “He just adds an element to our show that I think is wonderful, but even besides all that, I just want him around... I miss him, and it was great to see him in that brief time. It was great to see him. He’s an exceptional person.”

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
