Fans React to Ellen DeGeneres Missing Dakota Johnson's Birthday to Attend Football Game With George W. Bush

The talk show host came under fire for sitting next to the former president at a Dallas Cowboys game.

The internet has been abuzz since Dakota Johnson's recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The Fifty Shades of Grey star was on the daytime talk show last week and called out DeGeneres when she claimed she was not invited to Johnson's 30th birthday party in October.

"How was the party? I wasn't invited," the talk show host claimed.

Johnson replied, "Actually, no, that's not the truth, Ellen. You were invited."

Coming to DeGeneres' defense, the show's producer noted that the host was "out of town," to which DeGeneres replied, "Oh yeah, I had a thing."

Fans were quick to note that DeGeneres was in fact out of town. On the weekend of Johnson's birthday party in Malibu, California, the 61-year-old comedian made waves when she and wife Portia de Rossi were spotted at a Dallas Cowboys game seated next to former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura Bush.

The sighting was so controversial that DeGeneres had to address it on her show later that week. "Here's the thing, I'm friends with George Bush. In fact, I'm friends with a lot of people who don't share the same beliefs that I have," she said at the time. "We're all different, and I think that we've forgotten that that's OK that we're all different."

Nearly two months later, Johnson's appearance on Ellen brought the talk show host's friendship with the former president back to the forefront -- at least on Twitter.

"Ellen missed Dakota Johnson’s birthday party because it was the same weekend she attended that football game with George W. Bush. I’m shaking you guys..." one tweet read.

Another Twitter user wrote: "Dakota Johnson may have literally been calling Ellen out for not coming to her party, but her TONE said she was calling her out for her friendship with George Bush. ☕"

Here are a few other reactions to Johnson's interview with DeGeneres.

Tweets such as these haven't stopped DeGeneres from defending her famous friends and acquaintances. She recently stood up for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Here's what she had to say:
