#1. 'The LEGO Movie'

Decimating the competition, The LEGO Movie nabbed a monumental $69 million, which is $29 million more than the opening analysts predicted. The film's directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord, have hit another one out of the park, with their last releases, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street, also opening to big numbers.
The LEGO Movie also managed to set a record for the biggest Warner Bros. animated film release of all time, beating out their previous record-holder Happy Feet, which made $41.5 million. Warner Bros. has already announced that they have hired a writer to begin working on The LEGO Movie's sequel.

#2. 'Monuments Men'

Directed by and starring George Clooney, and sporting a cast that includes Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett to name just a few, the film exceeded expectations with its $22.7 million dollar opening, making it the biggest debut for any film Clooney has directed.
#3. 'Ride Along'

Ride Along stayed strong, dropping only two spots to third place. It earned another $9.3 million, bringing its total to $105.1 million, well above it's relatively-low $25 million budget.
#4. 'Frozen'

Walt Disney
Dropping from second to fourth, Disney's money-making phenomenon earned $6.9 million this weekend, well below any other weekend since its wide release. Warner Bros. animated juggernaut The LEGO Movie presumably stole some of Frozen's youthful audience.
#5. 'That Awkward Moment'

The bromantic comedy starring Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan feel to fifth place, earning $5.5 million, and bringing its domestic total to $16.8 million, nearly twice its $8 million budget.
#6. 'Lone Survivor'

Mark Wahlberg's gritty, military bio-pic earned $5.2 million, for a domestic total of $112 million.
#7. 'Vampire Academy'

This heavily-advertised fantasy vampire film, based off a series of novels of the same name, failed to connect with audiences, bringing in $4.1 million in its debut weekend, and only around $1500 per screen.
#8. 'The Nut Job'

Falling four places, from fourth to eighth, The Nut Job snagged $3.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $55 million.
#9. 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit'

Paramount
Hanging in the Top 10 by its fingernails, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit earned $3.6 million, bringing its overall total to $44.4 million, well below its $60 million budget.
#10. 'Labor Day'

In only its second weekend in wide release, Labor Day slipped to 10th place, earning $3.2 million and bringing its total to $10.1 million, against an $18 million budget.
