Marilyn Monroe

Douglas Kirkland
"Marilyn arrived late, an apparition floating like a mirage. She eventually said, 'I want to be alone with this boy, I find it usually works better that way.' The photos are a testament to this." -Douglas Kirkland
John Travolta

Douglas Kirkland
"I knew John and had photographed him, before and had seen Saturday Night Fever and was convinced it would make him a super star. He wanted to wear a denim suit, but I persuaded him to wear what became his signature white suit. Newsweek turned the pictures down
and Time Magazine decided to put him on their cover. Someone lost their job at Newsweek!"

Mick Jagger

Douglas Kirkland
"Mick Jagger and Keith Richard were shooting the 'Undercover of the Night' music video in Mexico, and I was sent there it by the London Sunday Times. We worked long and late hours and they were playful and completely cooperative." -DK
Audrey Hepburn

Douglas Kirkland
"How to Steal A Million, directed by William Wyler. Paris 1965 was a special year, I met my future wife, Francoise, on that set. We have been married more that fifty years to this day." -DK
Charlie's Angels

Douglas Kirkland
"I photographed the girls for the cover of TV Guide. They were so hot that this also became a Time Magazine cover and went around the world. It amuses me that this has become an iconic image, a symbol of that era." -DK
Cher

Douglas Kirkland
"Roller Skating was the rage in the mid-70s in California. Everyone used to gather on Monday nights at the Reseda Roller Rink in LA for a party organized by Jack Nicholson's friend, Helena Kallianiotes. Everyone went there, it was roller mania! When I got the assignment from Life Magazine to photograph Cher for a cover, we decided to take the skates to Venice Beach and Cher was unquestionably the star!" -DK
Elizabeth Taylor

Douglas Kirkland
"Elizabeth started my career photographing celebrities. I said, 'Elizabeth, I am new with this magazine [Look Magazine], could you imagine what it would mean to me if you give me an opportunity to photograph you?' She thought for a moment nodded her head, and said, 'Come tomorrow night at 7:30.' I wouldn't be where I am today without her generosity." -DK
Judy Garland

Douglas Kirkland
"After traveling with Judy for a month on assignment, we were wrapping up shooting a cover for Look Magazine. I was sitting within arm's reach from her and we started talking about her life, her difficulties, her sadness and insecurities. Then she started to cry." -DK
Marilyn Monroe

Douglas Kirkland
"Before Marilyn would even look at the images when I went to her place to show them to her, she sent me out to get a grease pencil, a loupe and some scissors. She looked though the images quickly at first and then again and started to fall in love with them. When she came to this image, she said, 'Now this girl, this girl is a girl that any man would want to be in that bed with.'" -DK
Titantic

Douglas Kirkland
"I worked on the Making of James Cameron's Titanic off and on for 45 days. I used to drive from my house in the Hollywood Hills to Rosario Beach, Baja California, where they were shooting long hours. The publicist on the film, Eileen Peterson, used to call me to inform me if a critical scene was going to be shot, and sometimes I'd get into my car at 4 a.m. and rush down there. This particular image is one of my favorite because of the spontaneous joy and fun and chemistry between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet." -DK
