Donald Glover Opens Up About Playing Lando Calrissian in Upcoming 'Star Wars': 'You Couldn't Say No'
The 'Atlanta' star is not taking for granted the out-of-this-world opportunity.
Donald Glover knows the importance of looking the part.
The Atlanta star called into the Big Boy's Neighborhood radio show on Real 92.7 recently, and spoke at length on a number of topics, including how he landed the iconic Lando Calrissian role in the upcoming yet-to-be-titled Star Wars Han Solo film.
"I just grew the mustache, man," the 33-year-old artist laughed, referring to the original Lando, Billy Dee Williams', iconic facial hair. "It just happened."
Glover went on to reveal that there were around four auditions for the film, and despite turning himself into a bonafide household name with his breakout TV show, FX's Atlanta, it was important to show what he could bring to the part.
"I wanted to show them that I know what I'm doing," Glover explained. "I definitely came in, and we had to test with people, and see how our chemistry is and stuff."
And now that it's a real thing, he admits that the pressure is on.

"There's a lot of pressure, when you walk down the street, people are like, 'Yo, I'm excited about that Lando thing,'" he said, acknowledging that he really never had a choice whether or not to take it.
"It's a really cool, iconic role. You couldn't say no to it," Glover shared. "People are excited about it, but also I get to do it in a new way. I take it really seriously."
Of course, the price of success is... being very busy, which has caused production on season two of Atlanta to be delayed, and has sadly put the long-rumored Childish Gambino (Glover's musician moniker)-Chance the Rapper collaboration album on the backburner.
"We definitely met up before. I don't know if I'll see him again now that he's won a GRAMMY, we'll see what happens," Glover joked. "We're both busy, but ... when he have a moment we've been sitting down and just working together."
"I think it's just about catching a vibe," he added, noting that he prefers to do all his business in person these days. "I don't work with people over email anymore, I think it just doesn't work."
Meanwhile, Star Wars is just one of the major roles Glover has landed recently. The actor was also announced to play Simba in the upcoming Lion King film, and was also tapped for an undisclosed role in the upcoming Spider-Man film, which according to him, is being kept VERY under wraps.

"I'm not allowed to say. I'm not even allowed to leave my trailer without a hood on," he revealed. "But it's a cool character."
