Angelina Jolie's upcoming drama First They Killed My Father is exploring the terrifying reality of life in Cambodia under the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, led by Prime Minister Pol Pot.

In this first emotionally charged trailer for the intense drama, which takes place in the 1970s, we get a look at the early days of Pol Pot's murderous regime from the point of view of a 5-year-old girl, who soon sees her world torn apart.

From being forced to flee with her family to enduring harrowing encounters with violent government officials and becoming a child solider as her siblings are sent to labor camps, the story is ultimately one of determination and the resilience of the human spirit.


First They Killed My Father
, which was directed by Jolie, is based on the memoir of the same name by Cambodian activist Loung Ung, who survived the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime as a child.

Jolie and Ung worked together to pen the script. Jolie directed and produced the film along with acclaimed Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh, while Jolie's son, Maddox, served as one of the film's executive producers.
