Bacall began her career in entertainment in the early '40s as a fashion model until she was discovered by director Howard Hawks and his wife. Hawks cast Bacall in the 1944 romantic war film To Have And Have Not, adapted from the novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway.

It was on the set of To Have Or Have Not that Bacall met Hollywood tough-guy Humphrey Bogart.

Bogart and Bacall married in 1945 and remained married until Bogart's death in 1957, at the age of 57, from cancer related to smoking. The couple had two children.
