Jennifer Lopez vs. Mariah Carey, Chrissy Teigen vs. Iggy Azalea at Shadiest BMAs Ever
By John Boone
Good thing the Billboard Music Awards exist, because musicians do not get enough opportunities to give each other awards.
That was shady of us, but it isn’t close to the shadiest thing that happened at last night’s BMAs. Shade is always entertaining. So, actually, it is a good thing the Billboard Music Awards exist, so that Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey can shade each other for our pleasure.
First up: Jennifer vs. Mariah, whose feud dates back decades (over “stolen” songs? Who knows, who cares) and is apparently strong as ever. You’ll surely remember, way back when, Mariah was asked what she thought of Beyoncé and absolutely gushed over her. Then she was asked about J.Lo and:
Later, on The Larry King Show, Mariah explained, “There's rivalry, but I don't think she has anything to do with me.” Meanwhile, just last year, Lopez told Andy Cohen, “I don’t have a feud against her at all...I’ve read things that she’s said about me that were not the greatest, but we have never met. Like, we don’t know each other.”
She might be able to talk the talk, but Jenny from the block isn’t walking the walk, because this was her reaction when the camera cut to her after Mariah performed at the BMAs:
Subtle. Masterful. (Also, note Kylie Jenner in the background, because LOL.)
What you didn’t see on TV is that Jennifer Lopez didn’t bother watching the performance -- the entire time Mariah was performing her new song, “Infinity,” she was scrolling Instagram on her phone.
Next up:Chrissy Teigen vs. Iggy Azalea. There’s not much back story here -- nothing we know of, at least -- but when Chrissy saw Iggy and her new face arrive on the red carpet, she turned to E’s Guiliana Rancic and mouthed “It’s Iggy,” before rolling her eyes almost directly at the camera.
Here’s the instant replay if you need to see the moment isolated:
Verdict: Not-at-all subtle shade. This might actually be a straight diss. Still, it’s subtler than Azealia Banks’ thoughts on Iggy’s new, uh, look:
Last up: Guiliana herself didn’t get out of the night without potential shade thrown her way either. After interviewing E! sister Kendall Jenner, Guiliana went in for the so chic double air kiss and got big time rejected:
Verdict: Probably not shade. Kendall probably just doesn’t understand.
Then there’s Nicki Minaj, who just shaded TF out of the whole show:
What period of time did these billboard awards cover?
