Zayn Malik Defends His Cover Art From Claims He Copied Lil Wayne

The former One Direction member claims he had this idea for a long time.

It's hard not to compare Zayn Malik's new album art for Mind of Mine to that of Lil Wayne's Carter III and The Carter IV -- but the "Pillowtalk" singer claims he came up with the idea all on his own.

The former One Direction member unveiled the cover art on  Wednesday's Tonight Show and since then, many have called out how similar the image looks to Weezy's work. Like on Lil Wayne's albums, Malik superimposed his current tattoos to a photo of himself as a child.

"I'm not tryna be no rapper," the 23-year-old musician tweeted on Thursday night. "My album is me a child. My ideas have been with me a long time."

"Use your brain," he added. "Appreciate art, don't discriminate what you don't understand."

Malik then proceeded to call out other artists with similar album covers, including Drake and Nas. "True. A lot of artists use it for their own reasons," he responded to one of his followers.

Lil Wayne has yet to respond.

One person who didn't seem to mind Malik's album artwork was his new girlfriend, Gigi Hadid. After his Tonight Show performance, she tweeted a bunch of celebratory emojis.

She also spoke with ET about how supportive her beau is when it comes to her modeling career. When asked what Malik thought of her sexy photos in the recent Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, the 20-year-old responded, "He obviously liked the pictures."
