Charlize Theron Admits She Had a 'Rough Time' Working With Tobey Maguire on 'Cider House Rules'

The 40-year-old actress admits she had a difficult relationship with her co-star.

Charlize Theron admits she had a taxing relationship with Tobey Maguire while shooting the 1999 film, Cider House Rules.

Maguire was Theron's love interest in the Oscar-nominated movie, but off-camera, the 40-year-old actress says the actors had a "rough time" getting along.

"It was a difficult movie," Theron confides to V magazine. "I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time. The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time."

Theron insists that she and Maguire have since put aside their differences. "I love Tobey. I'm kind of glad we had that experience on that movie. It teaches you different things," the Oscar winner explains. "It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone else. We had some really intimate moments."

However, Theron adds that there weren't sparks between the actors off-screen. "Tobey and I didn't feel that way about each other," she shares. "So I had to figure something else out."

Theron gives her reasons for not always meshing with her co-stars. "Every day is completely different for a completely different reason," she continues. "Whether it's the weather, or the writing isn't there, or you don't get along with your cast mate, you have to be able to go to something else that's just as powerful. Does it make it as enjoyable? Probably not."

The A-list star also disclosed in an earlier interview that she bumped heads with her Mad Max: Fury Road co-star, Tom Hardy. "From what I hear, he's not like that on every movie -- I hear he's had good experiences,” Theron told WSJ magazine of the 38-year-old actor. "Maybe the movie is what it is because we struggled so much with each other and those characters had to struggle so much with each other. If we were chum-chum, maybe the movie would have been 10 times worse."
