Kerry Washington and some of her famous friends have discovered a way to get their money's worth when shopping for maternity wear.
The Scandal star is in the middle of filming the sixth season of the ABC drama with baby No. 2 on the way, which presents unique challenges when it comes to selecting wardrobe for her pantsuit-wearing character, Olivia Pope.
"There's nothing high-end for professional women who are pregnant," Washington, 39, tells InStyle, "so for the show, we wind up just buying the same clothes. We will cut out the front of Armani trousers and put in a pregnancy panel. That's what we do for everything."
In Washington's personal life, the hunt for desirable maternity clothes has gotten much easier, thanks to friend Jessica Alba.
"She told me she had this box of maternity clothes that she would ship from girlfriend to girlfriend. I was like, 'Can I have it?'" Washington said. "And then I started doing it as well. I'm not getting clothes back that I wore the first time. Everybody adds cute stuff to the box. You're less afraid to spend money because you feel that a lot of people are going to use it."
The Golden Globe-nominated actress confirmed her pregnancy in May when she debuted her baby bump on the Met Gala red carpet. She and her husband, former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, are already parents to 2-year-old daughter Isabelle.
Washington is on the latest cover of InStyle, which hits newsstands Aug. 12.
