“Holding Max, I thought about all the work ahead of us to create the world we want for our children,” the 32-year-old Facebook co-founder and CEO wrote on Wednesday. “This work is bigger than any presidency and progress does not move in a straight line.”

“The most important opportunities of Max’s generation -- like curing all disease, improving education, connecting everyone and promoting equal opportunity -- will take long term focus and finding new ways for all of us to work together, sometimes over decades,” Zuckerberg continued.

He was hopeful that with time and effort, the results will come.

“We are all blessed to have the ability to make the world better, and we have the responsibility to do it. Let’s go work even harder,” Zuckerberg concluded.

On Thursday, president-elect Trump met with President Barack Obama, while First Lady Michelle Obama visited with Melania Trump at the White House. Trump called the commander-in-chief a “very good man.”

"Mr. President, it was a great honor being with you and I look forward to being with you many, many more times," Trump said, adding that he would seek “counsel” from Obama.

Prior to the results of the presidential election, Obama addressed the nation with a message of optimism no matter the outcome.

"It's finally election night, and I imagine that's welcome news to most of you, because let's face it, this has been an exhausting, stressful, and sometimes downright weird election for all of us," he said during a speech that was streamed on BuzzFeed. "But here's what I want everybody to know. While we've certainly seen some new things this time around, what isn't new is that our democracy has always been rowdy and raucous. We've been through tough and divisive elections before, and we've always come out stronger for it. That's what makes America special -- the idea that while progress isn't guaranteed, each of us has the power to choose our path, not just on nights like this, but every day in between."
