Tarek El Moussa says he and his ex-wife, Christina, are committed to being a "unit" -- despite their recent split.

In a new interview with People, the Flip or Flop star reflects on having his divorce play out in the press over the past few months, and declares that he and Christina will always be "family."

"I'll always love Christina," Tarek says. "She's the mother of my children."

Tarek and Christina announced their split in December, though secretly broke up in May, following a heated fight that led to police being called out to their Orange County, California, home.

"I feel like a huge weight has been lifted since the news came out," Tarek tells the magazine, adding that his battle with testicular cancer was also a factor in the pair's split.

“We're getting through this by staying great friends and being the best parents possible," he continues. "Divorced couples who fight their whole lives really mess up their kids. We had a talk and said, 'We still want the kids to understand we're a unit -- that we're still a family even if we're not together.'"

Tarek, who now lives in Newport Beach after moving out of his family's Yorba Linda home last summer, says that he and Christina share custody of their kids, 6-year-old Taylor and 1-year-old Brayden, "pretty much 50-50" -- though it's definitely been an "adjustment."

And while Christina has hit the dating pool since their break-up -- recently splitting with her contractor boyfriend -- Tarek confesses he's "so far from even considering a new relationship," and concedes that even when he is ready, he and his ex-wife will "probably always spend the holidays together" with their children.

For now, Tarek says he's focusing on what makes him the "happiest: being the best father possible."

ET sat down with Tarek last month, where he opened up about his high-profile split, and the possibility of reconciling with Christina in the future.
