Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
fans were thrilled to see rogue agent Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) return to the fold in recent weeks, joining back up with the team in the hopes of finding some answers about the mysterious Darkhold. However, after the events of the last episode -- which saw half the team vanish into thin air after Eli Morrow (José Zúñiga) revealed his true motives and harnessed the Darkhold to imbue himself with otherworldly powers -- it seems like answers might be hard to come by.

“This next episode is really about the rest of the team trying to figure out what the f*** is going on,” Bennet told ET ahead of Tuesday’s episode, titled “Deal With Our Devils,” which finds Daisy and the remaining members of the team short-handed and searching for a solution after Coulson (Clark Gregg), Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Morrow’s nephew, Robbie Reyes aka Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna), have disappeared.

“We’re dealing with the Darkhold, which is something that is not really rooted in a science that people can explain,” the actress added. “Fitz and Simmons can’t really explain certain things, because part of the Darkhold is unexplainable, and it’s got an air of magic to it.”

Unfortunately, having Fitz gone also leaves the S.H.I.E.L.D. team without one of their resident brainiacs, leaving Daisy and the other agents to try and take matters into their own hands, while practically flying blind.

“We definitely have some key members of the team, who would be very helpful in figuring this out, missing and gone,” Bennet explained. “It actually is one of the more unique episodes that I think we’ve ever shot on the show. Technically, and in some of the behind-the-scenes aspects, it was also one of the top ten most difficult to shoot. You’ll kind of see why [in the episode].”

While Daisy had initially agreed to work with S.H.I.E.L.D. until they tracked down Morrow and the Darkhold, fans can only hope that helping to save her former teammates from supernatural peril will bring the rogue agent back on board more permanently.

“My gut is that she’s not going to be like, ‘Oh, they’re all gone? Bye!’” Bennet said with a laugh. “It’s very important to her to find them. That might just keep happening for a while. She’s trying to leave, but then there’s another thing, and then there’s another thing. Who knows?”

And while Robbie isn’t a bonafide member of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, Bennet feels that Daisy is motivated to help save him because the two have “found kindred spirits in one another.”

“I think they kind of have an unspoken acknowledgement that they’re feeling similar pain, and I don’t think that goes away,” she said of her character’s bond with the fiery antihero. “They understand each other in a way that probably other people don’t. I like that dynamic a lot, but now it’s kind of at the point where there’s a lot of other things going on.”

The actress was also happy to develop that dynamic with Luna without worrying about a romantic subplot between their characters. After Daisy lost her boyfriend, Lincoln (Luke Mitchell), in last season's finale, Bennet thought it appropriate to observe a suitable mourning period.

“I don’t think there’s any room for her to be falling in love or liking anyone at this point,” she admitted. “I think she’s still in an incredible amount of pain from losing Lincoln [and the events of last season]. I think there’s a lot of guilt built up, and I’m glad that there was no forced relationship [between Daisy and Robbie], because I don’t think that would have been right for them. I think this way, it was weirdly more personal.”

For her part, Bennet hopes that her character eventually finds her own happiness, after several seasons of heartbreak, tragedy, and guilt.

“You see that in the beginning of the season, with Ghost Rider, she didn’t care if she died or not,” she said of Daisy’s heartbreaking headspace. “That’s no way to live... I really just want like, a genuine sense of happiness and peace for her.”

Coming back to the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, which has served as Daisy’s surrogate family over the last four seasons, would be a good start.

“Her whole goal as a child was to find her family,” Bennet added, “and she found her blood parents, but I think all along, she kind of had this family right in front of her the whole time. [The rest of the journey] is going to be her really realizing that.”
