The film tells the story of Frank Adler (Evans) raising his spirited
young niece, Mary (Mckenna Grace), who, at seven years old, has an unusual command
of mathematics. Intent on having Mary lead a normal life, Frank tries to
protect her from his mother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), whose aspirations for Mary
threaten the simple life he’s created in their Florida coastal town. Spencer
plays Frank and Mary’s protective landlady, Roberta, and Slate plays Mary’s
teacher, Bonnie, a woman who develops a relationship with Frank. Directed by Marc
Webb, Gifted is scheduled to hit
theaters on April 7.
While Evans, Slate and Spencer come with their own
experience and pedigree (“I feel very lucky to be included in a group of actors
who care so much about the actual craft of acting,” Slate told ET), it’s Grace
who runs away with the film. “Very quickly, Marc and I were convinced that she was
the girl for the part,” Evans said. “I mean, she knocked it out of the ballpark.”
“A lot of kids, you know, don't have that ‘je ne sais quoi.’
She does,” Spencer added in praise of her young costar.
