Zac Efron's 'We Are Your Friends' Had One of the Worst Box Office Openings in History

Zac Efron's newest movie is making the wrong kind of history.

The Warner Bros. film, We Are Your Friends, where Zac Efron plays a sexy "Calvin Harris-in-the-making type" DJ alongside his sexy love interest, Emily Ratajkowski, grossed approximately $1.8 million in 2,333 theaters over its opening weekend, making it the fourth worst wide-release movie to ever debut, behind Saw's 10th anniversary re-release, and a couple other movies you almost definitely have never heard of.

The film had a $6 million budget.

This is a big upset for Zac, who apparently was passionate about the film, which never attracted support from the EDM community. An "accurate" version of the trailer was created that started circulating on electronic music websites, and Warner Bros. has been criticized for not doing enough to promote the movie more at music festivals, and debuting it the weekend before Labor Day, when many college students go back to school.

"This was a passion project for Zac Efron, and we believe in him," said Warner Bros. exec VP for domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein to The Hollywood Reporter. "Yes, the result was disappointing, but this was a small film."

While certainly a huge (historic) disappointment, Zac has still proven to be a bankable star! His last wide-released film, 2014's Neighbors, alongside Seth Rogen, made over $49 million in its opening weekend, and has a sequel in the works.

Still, if you are Zac's friends, maybe give him a call this weekend. It might help!

While the movie bombed, Emily at least finds acting a much more creatively fulfilling career than modeling.

"I think every experience is different," said Emily to ET earlier in August, while addressing Cara Delevingne's decision to quit modeling. "Definitely, I feel like acting is much more creatively fulfilling and I think Cara is a very creative person, as am I, and so, we want more."
