This year has seen a lot of celebrity breakups, from Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's public separation to Taylor Swift's split from Calvin Harris AND Tom Hiddleston.

But, like they say, the end of one chapter is just the beginning of another. Here's a recap of this year's most devastating breakups (in no particular order).

This year marked the end of Brangelina.

Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in September after two years of marriage and requested physical custody of their six children -- Maddox, Shiloh, Pax, Zahara, and twins Vivienne and Knox. Both parties, who began dating in 2005, listed Sept. 15, 2016 as their separation date, and cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their divorce.

Over the past few months, their divorce drama has continued to make headlines as new facts regarding their split, custody battle, and reported child abuse allegations, which have since been cleared -- emerged.

Mariah Carey and James Packer

The "Vision of Love" singer was "totally blindsided" by the way her breakup from her ex-fiancé, James Packer, publicly unfolded, especially given how in love the two seemed to be in the weeks leading up to their split.

In October, Carey's rep confirmed to ET that the couple was on a break, following a fight between the two during a trip to Greece in September. The two were first reported to be dating in June 2015, and Packer proposed to Carey in January with a $10 million, 35-carat diamond ring, which she plans to keep.

Months after the breakup, Carey sparked romance rumors with her backup dancer, Bryan Tanaka, after a series of PDA-heavy photos were taken of the two in Hawaii. Since then these lovebirds have been inseparable.

Hadid and The Weeknd called it quits in November, after a year and a half together, and have since become the epitome of friendly exes.
A source tells ET that the two just couldn't make it work with their busy schedules. The Weeknd has been focusing on promoting his album, Starboy, while Hadid has a thriving modeling career. Despite their breakup, the pair have remained close friends, the source said, adding that there is "a great deal of love" between them.

Their palpable chemistry was more than evident during this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Rocking a skin-bearing, pewter-colored ensemble complete with a flowing gray cape, the 20-year-old model shared a sweet moment with her ex-boyfriend as he performed his single "Starboy."

"He's the best, we're still great friends," Bella told ET's Kevin Frazier backstage, moments before hitting the runway. "I'm excited. It's his second show, so I know he's gonna kill it."

Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts

Sadly, these two A-list actors are moving on, but it's clear that they have a lot of respect and love for each other. The former couple split in September, after 11 years together, but have been putting their two kids first, and even wishing each other a happy birthday on Instagram days after their breakup.

In a joint statement to ET, Watts and Schreiber said they're now looking forward to "a new phase" in their relationship, and joint-parenting.

"Over the past few months we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple," the statement read. "It is with great love, respect, and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship."

Earlier this month, Schreiber opened up about the breakup for the first time during an interview with CBS This Morning. "I feel like change is always scary, but that's only because transition for anyone is new and you wonder how things are going to go," he said. "We're parents together. We'll be together for the rest of our lives, no matter what."

Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris

There goes another one!

The 26-year-old singer and DJ/music producer, 32, broke up in June, after celebrating their one-year anniversary in March. The news came out of left field, since shortly after their anniversary, Swift and Harris marked the occasion with a romantic tropical vacation, where the duo once known as Tayvin posed for each other's Instagram pics and wrote their names in the sand.

And while their breakup seemed amicable at the start, things took a bit of a turn when Swift's burgeoning relationship with Tom Hiddleston came to light. Harris unfollowed his ex on Instagram and both stars purged their Instagram profiles of photos of each other. Harris refollowed the singer, after the new video for their hit song "This Is What You Came For" debuted

Less than a month after splitting from Calvin Harris, Swift was snapped kissing on a beach outside of her multi-million dollar home in Watch Hill, Rhode Island with Hiddleston.

A month later, Hiddleston confirmed his relationship with Swift. "Well, um. How best to put this? That notion is -- look, the truth is that Taylor Swift and I are together and we're very happy," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "That's the truth."

Shortly after, the pair embarked on a whirlwind international romance, going on romantic dates in Italy, England, Nashville, and Australia, where Hiddleston was filming Thor: Ragnarok. Swift even met Hiddleston's mother, Diane, in June, when the two went to England to visit her.

Sadly, after three months of dating, the two split in September. "It was an amicable split," a source told ET. However, according to a report, the 26-year-old singer was the one to end the relationship.

"She was the one to put the brakes on the relationship," a source told Us Weekly. "Tom wanted the relationship to be more public than she was comfortable with."

"It was an intense start," an insider added. "No one can keep that kind of momentum going."

After five years together, Gaga and the Chicago Fire star ended their relationship in July. The two began dating after meeting on the set of Gaga's music video, "You and I." They got engaged on Valentine's Day last year.

Hours after their split was confirmed, the "Joanne" singer took to social media to break her silence with an emotional post.

"Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates,” the 30-year-old singer wrote. “Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break.”

"We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared,” Gaga continued. “Please root us on. We're just like everybody else and we really love each other.”

And it looks like fans are indeed rooting for them. Earlier this month, Gaga posted a photo on Instagram of her mother and Kinney attending a charity event together and fans couldn't contain their excitement, writing, "Are you back together???" and "Get back together already."

It's a "Stone Cold" world.

The 24-year-old singer and Valderrama called it quits in June after six years of dating. The two released a joint statement on their Instagram accounts calling the decision to break up "incredibly difficult."

"After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship," the joint statement began.

"This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends," the statement continued. "We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years."

The news shocked fans, since only a few months earlier, Lovato had shared her love for the The Ranch actor on social media.

"My love has grown to a level that words could never possibly express how much this man completes me," she wrote on Instagram, alongside a pic of the two kissing. "... After sharing my ups, putting up with my downs and supporting my recovery... he still never takes credit and I want the world to know how incredible his soul is. I really wouldn't be alive today without him. I love you Wilmer."

The 29-year-old Scream Queens star and Paetz broke up in February after nearly two years of dating. The two met in April 2014 while filming her music video for "On My Way." The model was her first boyfriend since the death of her Glee co-star and longtime love, Cory Monteith, in July 2013.

Despite the surprising split, Michele found love again. A source confirmed to ET in May that Michele and Robert Buckley, 35, met through mutual friends and had already been dating for a couple of months -- though their romance didn’t last much longer. The two play love interests in Dimension 404, a six-episode sci-fi fantasy anthology drama.

Barrymore and Kopelman really did try to make their marriage a lasting one.

The two started dating in early 2011 and said "I do" at Barrymore's Montecito, California, estate in June 2012.

"Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family," they said in a joint statement in April. "Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on."

"Drew is really bummed that it didn't work out," a source close to Berrymore told ET. "They really tried hard towards the end to make it work, but they decided going their separate ways was best."

This marks the third divorce for Barrymore. She was previously married to her Charlie's Angels co-star, Tom Green, for five months in 2001. She also wed Jeremy Thomas, a Los Angeles bar owner, when she was age 19. The two said "I do" in May 1994 and divorced two months later.

After 10 years together, Kruger and Jackson decided to go their separate ways in July. The couple began dating in 2006 after Kruger, 40, split from her husband of five years, French director Guillaume Canet.

Throughout the course of their relationship, the pair dodged marriage and engagement rumors. When asked by The Edit if she would ever consider tying the knot again, Kruger answered, "Welcome to my dilemma."

Despite ending their relationship over the summer, the two are still enjoying one another's company. The friendly exes were spotted embracing at LAX airport in August and later seen out and about in Los Angeles, grabbing a bottle of wine.

Don't mess with Iggy Azalea!
The 26-year-old rapper split from former fiancé Nick Young in June after two and a half years together. The "Team" rapper announced the split on Instagram with a message that touched upon cheating rumors.

"Unfortunately although I love Nick and have tried and tried to rebuild my trust in him, it's become apparent in the last few weeks I am unable to," the 26-year-old Australian wrote. "I genuinely wish Nick the best. It's never easy to part ways with the person you planned you're [sic] entire future with, but futures can be rewritten and as of today mine is a blank page."

A month after the split, Azalea sparked romance rumors with French Montana after the pair were spotted partying together in a Las Vegas nightclub. The next month they vacationed in Mexico together. In September, the "Fancy" singer took to Instagram to show off seven diamond rings gifted to her by Montana.

Marc Anthony and Shannon De Lima

The 48-year-old singer and his wife of two years officially called it quits on Dec. 18. The two released a joint statement in Spanish and English.

"After much consideration, we have mutually and amicably decided to end our two year marriage," the statement obtained by ET read. "We ask for privacy during this difficult process, and no further comments will be made from either one of us about this personal matter."

Reports surfaced in November that Anthony and De Lima had separated. The couple quietly married in the Dominican Republic in November 2014, after two years of dating.

Initial news of the split came one day after Anthony was spotted without his wedding ring at the Latin GRAMMYs, where he and ex-wife Jennifer Lopez also made headlines for exchanging a friendly kiss onstage after performing together. The moment had plenty of fans hoping for a rekindled romance between the two, but a source told ET at the time that "Jennifer and Marc are not back together."
