Andrew Garfield is again talking about his sexuality, this time explaining its fluidity.

The 34-year-old actor spoke with Out Magazine about his ongoing role in a theatrical run of Angels in America, a groundbreaking play that examines what it meant to be gay or have AIDS in 1980s America. He also discussed his sexuality, a topic that has caused a stir in the past.

“Up until this point, I’ve only been sexually attracted to women,” Garfield said in the interview with the LGBTQ lifestyle magazine. “My stance toward life, though, is that I always try to surrender to the mystery of not being in charge. I think most people, we’re intrinsically trying to control our experience here and manage it and put walls around what we are and who we are. I want to know as much of the garden as possible before I pass."

"I have an openness to any impulses that may arise within me at any time," he continued.

Garfield famously dated Amazing Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone before the couple broke up in 2015. The pair appears to have remained close since then, with Garfield saying, "There's so much love between us."

But his sexuality has been a frequent topic of conversation over the past year. In a July Q&A panel about Angels in America, he infamously said that he was essentially a gay man, "just without the physical act."

"Every Sunday, I would have eight friends over, and we would just watch Ru -- that's literally it," he said at the time, referring to RuPaul's Drag Race. "This is my life outside of this play. I am a gay man right now, pretty much, just without the physical act -- that's all."

The quote was pounced upon as a flippant and perhaps ignorant view of what it means to be gay, particularly given the subject matter of the play in which he was performing. Garfield quickly walked back those comments, saying, "That's of course not what I meant at all.

"That discussion was about this play and how deeply grateful I am that I get to work on something so profound," he told Newsbeat at the time. "It's a love letter to the LGBTQ community. We were talking about, 'How do you prepare for something so important and so big?' and I was basically saying, 'I dive in as fully as I possibly can.'"

Garfield again referenced the controversy in his latest interview, but this time offering a slightly different explanation.

"I think part of what I was trying to say was about inclusion and about that openness to my impulses," he said.
