Flashback '08: Emmy Nominees 'Mad Men'

By

In 2007, the game-changing period drama Mad Men premiered on television. It had an immediate impact on the critics with the same force that it has had on fashion and TV dramas in general over its six seasons. As such, the 1960s-based drama swept up at the Emmys and Globes for its first season.

Now, we're flashing back to when Mad Men set a high precedent for its future seasons when it won Best Drama and Best Actor for Jon Hamm at the 2008 Golden Globes. However, they didn't actually receive the award at the Golden Globes that year, as the awards were announced via a news conference in lieu of the usual glitzy ceremony due to the Writers Guild strike.

Instead of getting dolled up and posing for pictures along the red carpet, the Mad Men stars congregated in casual attire on the roof of the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood to watch the announcements. Although they were unable to deliver any acceptance speeches, the cast and creator Matthew Weiner revealed that they preferred it the way it turned out.

"No, there's no disappointment," says Jon Hamm. "It was an amazing experience to be here...We are surrounded by everybody that worked on this show...[and] we were really able to share this as a huge team...That wouldn't have happened if we would have all had to be stuck in tuxedos at little tables way in the back."

Although Matthew Weiner would have liked to have delivered the acceptance speech that he'd been thinking about since he was a child, the cast echoes Hamm's preference of being with the Mad Men team over attending an awards ceremony.

Weiner would get another chance to deliver his long-awaited acceptance speech the following year at the Golden Globes and the year after that as well, as the show has gone on to win another three Golden Globes and now totals 15 Primetime Emmys.

Now, while the early magic has seemed to run out for the acclaimed series -- winning none of the 17 Emmy nominations it received last year, it is vying for a slew of nominations this year, including a sixth consecutive nod for Outstanding Drama Series. The AMC show has now received that nomination for all six of its seasons.
