<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/prince-philip" target="_blank">Prince Philip</a>, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/queen-elizabeth" target="_blank">Queen Elizabeth II</a>'s husband of <a href="https://etonline.com/prince-philip-and-queen-elizabeth-inside-the-longest-lasting-romance-of-the-british-monarchy-161590" target="_blank">more than 70 years</a>,&nbsp;has died, Buckingham Palace announced on Friday. He was 99.

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," read a statement.&nbsp;"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss," the statement continued, adding that "further announcements will be made in due course."

Philip's death&nbsp;comes after several health scares in recent years. Most recently, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/prince-philip-remains-in-good-spirits-as-hospitalization-continues-160887" target="_blank">he was hospitalized in February</a> and taken to the King Edward VII Hospital in London. In a statement, Buckingham Palace noted that it was "a precautionary measure" on the advice of his doctor after not feeling well.

He was later <a href="https://www.etonline.com/prince-philip-is-transferred-to-another-hospital-as-treatment-continues-161424" target="_blank">transferred from King Edward VII's Hospital&nbsp;to another London facility</a>,&nbsp;St. Bartholomew's Hospital, with the palace noting that he was continuing to be <a href="https://www.etonline.com/prince-philip-to-remain-hospitalized-for-several-more-days-as-hes-being-treated-for-an-infection" target="_blank">treated for an infection</a> in addition to undergoing testing and a procedure&nbsp;for a pre-existing heart condition. He <a href="https://www.etonline.com/prince-philip-leaves-the-hospital-after-a-month-of-treatment-162401" target="_blank">left the hospital</a>&nbsp;in March after a 28-day stay.

Prince Phillip officially retired from public duties in 2018. Ongoing struggles&nbsp;with his health forced him to&nbsp;cancel multiple public appearances including the&nbsp;Royal Maundy Service at St. George’s Chapel in 2018, which he pulled out of after experiencing <a href="http://www.etonline.com/prince-philip-misses-public-church-service-with-queen-elizabeth-due-to-hip-problems-99336" target="_blank">trouble with his hip.</a>&nbsp;He also skipped an&nbsp;Easter Sunday services at the chapel, although the <a href="http://www.etonline.com/pregnant-kate-middleton-and-prince-william-attend-easter-services-with-the-queen-pics-99482" target="_blank">Queen</a>, Prince William and Kate Middleton were in attendance. Prince Phillip&nbsp;underwent hip surgery in April 2018.

Despite the rigors of advanced age, Philip remained a stalwart presence in royal family life. In a <a href="http://www.etonline.com/prince-philip-looks-regal-new-portrait-96-following-his-retirement-see-pic-92459" target="_blank">portrait</a> painted by Australian-born artist Ralph Heimans marking&nbsp;the year of Philip's retirement and released in December 2017, the Duke of Edinburgh is shown in full regal glory in The Grand Corridor at Windsor Castle. He is depicted "wearing the sash of the Order of the Elephant, Denmark's highest-ranking honour," and a nod to Philip's Danish heritage. The portrait is on display at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark.

Queen Elizabeth&nbsp;and Prince Philip&nbsp;celebrated their 73nd&nbsp;wedding anniversary in November 2020 with a sweet portrait of them <a href="https://www.etonline.com/queen-elizabeth-and-prince-philip-admire-great-grandchildrens-card-in-73rd-anniversary-portrait" target="_blank">admiring a card made by the three children of Prince William and Kate Middleton</a> -- Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. In&nbsp;1947, the&nbsp;then-Princess Elizabeth married a dashing naval officer named Philip Mountbatten,&nbsp;who renounced his Greek and Danish titles upon the marriage.&nbsp;

Some around the royal court thought he might be a little too dashing&nbsp;and called him a "viking god,"&nbsp;according to one of the queen's bridesmaids, Margaret Rhodes.

"Well, he really was so good looking," Rhodes said.

How did the marriage work so well for so long? According to friends like Gyles Brandreth, the secret was division of labor.

"So essentially the queen has always worn the crown and Prince Philip was allowed to wear the trousers," Brandreth said. "She was the frontwoman. She is the person that people around the world know. It's her face that's on the postage stamps, but behind the scenes, he was there at every turn," Brandreth added.

A shared sense of humor may also have helped.&nbsp;Philip played&nbsp;a unique role in the queen's life, according to royal writer Roya Nikkah.

"The queen has spent seven decades living in a world where everyone says 'yes' to her. Philip is someone who can be completely forthright and tell her how it is," Nikkah said.

On their 70th anniversary, the queen <a href="http://www.etonline.com/queen-elizabeth-makes-prince-philip-knight-they-celebrate-70-years-marriage-91407" target="_blank">knighted</a> Philip, giving him the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, which recognizes distinguished personal service to her.

The Duke of Edinburgh's retirement was announced in May 2017, when royal staffers&nbsp;were brought in from all over the United Kingdom for the news,&nbsp;raising concerns over the health of the queen.&nbsp;All focus quickly turned to Prince Philip, however, after he&nbsp;announced his upcoming retirement. "His Royal Highness... has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year," according to a statement from Buckingham Palace. "In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of the Queen."&nbsp;

In August 2017, Philip undertook his official <a href="http://www.etonline.com/prince-philip-looks-regal-new-portrait-96-following-his-retirement-see-pic-92459" target="_blank">final engagement</a>, a parade to commemorate the end of the 1664 Global Challenge, a series of strength and endurance challenges that benefit charity. He tipped his hat while greeting those around him; Buckingham Palace noted that Prince Philip carried out 22,219 solo engagements and&nbsp;637 solo overseas visits since 1952 in addition to authoring 14 books and delivering 5,496 speeches.

The duke celebrated his 95th birthday in June 2016, commemorating the milestone with a sweet portrait taken by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz for Queen Elizabeth's <a href="http://www.etonline.com/news/189925_queen_elizabeth_poses_with_her_corgis_and_dorgis_for_annie_leibovitz_portraits_for_vanity_fair/">Vanity Fair spread</a>.

"He has quite simply been my strength &amp; stay all these years," Her Majesty said of her husband at the time, according to the royal family's official Twitter account.&nbsp;

In June 2020, he celebrated his 99th birthday at Windsor Castle with the queen, where they had been quarantined amid the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier that month, the royal couple <a href="https://www.etonline.com/queen-elizabeth-and-prince-philip-pose-for-portrait-in-quarantine-to-mark-philips-99th-birthday" target="_blank">posed for a new portrait</a> to mark the occasion.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl told ET that he was enjoying being out of the public eye with his wife.

"I'm told they're surrounded by a very small team of staff. Just a handful of staff between the two of them, which must be quite enjoyable for them not to have the formality of so many courtiers which is what the queen is used to when she's at Buckingham Palace," Nicholl said at the time.

Prince Philip is survived by his children, Prince Charles of Wales, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, along with several grandchildren -- including Prince William and Prince Harry -- and great-grandchildren, including William and Kate's children as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's son, Archie.&nbsp;

Newton-John, 70, recently <a href="https://www.etonline.com/olivia-newton-john-reveals-shes-battling-cancer-for-a-third-time-109330">revealed that she is battling cancer</a> for a third time. In an interview on Monday with ET's Nancy O'Dell, Newton-John shared the secret to her&nbsp;resilience. "Every day is a gift, anyway, we don't really know how long our life is," she said. "I'm very grateful. I intend to be here for a long time. I have so much to do still. I'm enjoying my life."

She said <a href="https://www.etonline.com/olivia-newton-john-sends-inspiring-message-to-alex-trebek-to-stay-focused-amid-cancer-battle-121273" target="_blank">she&nbsp;reached out</a> to Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, who <a href="https://www.etonline.com/alex-trebek-reveals-hes-been-diagnosed-with-stage-4-pancreatic-cancer-121027" target="_blank">announced last week</a> he is battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

&nbsp;

"I sent him a message saying 'You know, I know you can get through this,'" she said. "'Don't listen to stage 4,&nbsp;don't read the statistics. Stay focused and see how you can heal yourself.'"

2018 Golden Globes: Everything You Need To Know

Rose Marie Guy, a nine-decade entertainment veteran and star of The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Doris Day Show and Hollywood Squares, died on Dec. 28 in Van Nuys, Calif., according to a statement on her official <a href="http://www.missrosemarie.com/" target="_blank">website.</a>&nbsp;She was 94.

Born Rose Marie Mazetta in New York, she was a child star who became&nbsp;an established and beloved stage, movie and TV performer.&nbsp;

Rose Marie became a legendary household name in 1961 with her portrayal over five seasons as&nbsp;Van Dyke's officemate, the&nbsp;quick-witted&nbsp;comedy writer Sally Rogers. TV became Rose Marie's&nbsp;medium of choice, as she then moved on to The Doris Day Show, and appeared in every incarnation of the game show Hollywood Squares.

'Dick Van Dyke' Star Rose Marie Dead at 94

Ryan Gosling's most frequent co-star isn't <a href="http://www.etonline.com/people/emma-stone" target="_blank">Emma Stone</a>. It's Los Angeles.
Over the past 10 years, Gosling has starred in seven&nbsp;movies where&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/awards/208324_oscars_awards_2017_nominees_revealed">Los Angeles</a>&nbsp;not only serves as the setting, but as a character. And he's the first to admit that the sunny, messy, dynamic sprawl is one of the keys to his storytelling.
"'L.A. worships everything and values nothing.' That was something my lady said to me one day, and I thought it was so funny I asked her if I could put it in the movie," Gosling told ET's Denny Directo during the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/news/209462_exclusive_ryan_gosling_gives_update_on_whether_eva_mendes_will_join_him_at_the_oscars">Santa Barbara International Film Festival</a>, where he was promoting 2016's&nbsp;La La Land.&nbsp;(The lady in question, of course, is Gosling's longtime partner&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/news/223397_ryan_gosling_and_eva_mendes_show_rare_pda_during_adorable_disneyland_date">Eva Mendes,</a> although this being L.A., we do love the noirish connotations of him not identifying her by name.) "She was kidding, but it's a funny thing to say... I loved when she said it, because it's funny enough to have some truth to it, you know? But it's obviously a joke, so it just seemed appropriate for the movie."
From showing the city in a dystopian future in&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/movies/220122_new_blade_runner_2049_footage_reveals_more_about_ryan_gosling_harrison_ford_tense_face_off">Blade Runner 2049</a>, in theaters on Oct. 6, to nostalgia for the bad ol' days in&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/movies/128862_Gangster_Squad_Stars_Talk_Sex_Appeal_and_Swagger">Gangster Squad,</a>&nbsp;Gosling consistently embraces the good, the bad and the ugly of a city that some have called inherently unknowable because of its size and diversity. But that doesn't faze Gosling; he revels in it.

Alrighty then.&nbsp;But much like the original, there is an apocalyptic glam to Gosling's latest film -- even in the end times (and shot mostly in Budapest),&nbsp;it's recognizably Los Angeles. His character, K, is immersed in concrete canyons and a thunderous, looming&nbsp;Pacific Ocean, and San Diego has finally, officially, become Los Angeles's garbage dump.&nbsp;
La La Land (2016)

It checks every box in a location scout's dream: Griffith Park, the Colorado Street Bridge, the Watts Towers, the 105/110 freeway interchange heading away from LAX --&nbsp;which fine, that actually sucks, but the traffic jam is accurate. The production even got Angels Flight, the funicular that Gosling and Stone's characters ride through downtown L.A., to reopen after being shuttered for years.&nbsp;&nbsp;
"I was living around the corner from Angels Flight&nbsp;for years and it just never ran because there wasn’t the funding for it to keep it running," Gosling told the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/92091021-132.html">Los Angeles Times</a>.&nbsp;"It just seemed like such a shame to me, because it’s such a special part of its history. It’s great to be able to do a film and say, 'Hey, can we shoot on Angels Flight?'&nbsp;and suddenly they’ll open it up. This version of Los Angeles is not something we created, we just framed out the rest. But what’s there really is still there."

For whatever reason, Los Angeles seems to revel in the time period; the city will knock down gorgeous, historic&nbsp;1920s buildings&nbsp;in the blink of an eye, but that&nbsp;1978 Soviet-inspired mini-mall&nbsp;is&nbsp;entrenched, no questions asked.
The production designers of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/news/188495_ryan_gosling_beams_while_talking_about_birth_of_baby_girl_no_2">The Nice Guys</a>&nbsp;have great fun with this, and Gosling's sly performance as a dumber-than-dumb flailing private eye who teams up with Russell Crowe on the ticky-tackiest parts of Hollywood Boulevard proves that absurdity will always have a place in Los Angeles. It's a chucklehead&nbsp;L.A. Confidential, but with Gosling and his, uh,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/news/153147_ryan_gosling_goes_back_to_work_on_the_set_of_the_nice_guys">enthusiastic mustache</a>&nbsp;gleeful over his purchase of a new purple suit.
Gangster Squad (2013)

Cain glamour noir version of Los Angeles?&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/movies/127549_Gangster_Squad_Behind_The_Scenes_Video">Gangster Squad</a>&nbsp;is here for you. The contrast between L.A.'s perma-sun and its shadowy characters has long been irresistible; as Josh Brolin's character, Sgt. John O'Mara, says in the closing moments of the movie: "It's not paradise, but it's the City of Angels."
Gosling plays a good cop in a bad time, as&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/movies/128862_Gangster_Squad_Stars_Talk_Sex_Appeal_and_Swagger">Mickey Cohen</a>&nbsp;-- played by Sean Penn, who&nbsp;thankfully leaves some scenery unchewed so we can enjoy some vintage Los Angeles locations -- is solidifying his&nbsp;mob&nbsp;base in the city.&nbsp;Eagle-eyed viewers will spot Union Station (1939), L.A. City Hall (1928), Clifton's Cafeteria (1935), the Park Plaza Hotel (1925) and the Tower Theatre (1927).
Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011)

(I drive by the shooting location for Don Draper's Ossining, New York, home every day.&nbsp;The real-life owner is really into lawn decorations. It's a little jarring to think&nbsp;Mad Men's&nbsp;Betty Draper has such a dedication to seasonal displays.)
So while&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/news/204568_exclusive_how_emma_stone_and_ryan_gosling_became_the_bogart_hepburn_of_their_time">Crazy, Stupid, Love.</a>&nbsp;has an Everytown, USA, feel to it and is a departure from the gritty allure of most of Gosling's other L.A. films, it is still&nbsp;definitely Los Angeles. It features three, count 'em, three, different malls.&nbsp;Gosling chucks&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/movies/112402_Watch_Steve_Carell_and_Ryan_Gosling_On_Partnering_Up_For_Crazy_Stupid_Love">Steve Carell's</a>&nbsp;sad single dad sneakers off the top deck of the Westfield Century City Mall; one scene&nbsp;is&nbsp;at the now-defunct El Torito at the Sherman Oaks Galleria; and another&nbsp;takes place at the demolished&nbsp;Robinsons-May store in Beverly Hills. (Remember what I said earlier about tearing interesting buildings down and leaving mini-malls around here?)&nbsp;

Gosling's&nbsp;<a href="http://www.etonline.com/movies/131963_Ryan_Gosling_Sexiest_Film_Roles">Driver</a>&nbsp;and Carey Mulligan's Irene live in the omnipresent Park Plaza Hotel -- see&nbsp;Gangster Squad&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;original&nbsp;Blade Runner&nbsp;for other glimpses; Driver meets with Irene's husband in MacArthur Park, across the street from the Park Plaza; a chase scene goes past the Staples Center. (And for what it's worth, that elevator scene was filmed at the Los Angeles City Center Studios just off of the 110 freeway downtown.)
"I made 'Drive'&nbsp;at a period of time where I was living in downtown L.A. and I’d seen a whole side of it that I’d never seen before," Gosling told the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/92091021-132.html">Los Angeles Times.</a>&nbsp;"I felt really lucky to be able to channel that into a film." According to an interview with&nbsp;<a href="http://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2011/09/15/140504751/drive-lets-the-songs-do-the-feeling">NPR</a>, director Nicolas Winding Refn and Gosling drove around the city together to develop the character and the look of the film. "I'm very much a fetish filmmaker in the sense that I just shoot what I would like to see," Refn said.
Fracture (2007)

This is a sinuous tale; the&nbsp;curves of the story are reflected in the&nbsp;cars speeding along winding canyon roads and in the undulations of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This is the 1 percent of Los Angeles populated by&nbsp;posh cars on Pacific Coast Highway&nbsp;and big, boxy, antiseptic&nbsp;glass houses -- one of the cops describes the design of Crawford's home as "homicidal modern."&nbsp;(Ponder, if you will, that Gosling was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for this role...which makes no sense for an R-rated movie except for the fact that he looks about 15 in it.)

Let’s get the numbers out of the way on <a href="http://www.etonline.com/celebs/serena_williams/" target="_blank">Serena Williams</a>’ 
tennis career: Over her 21-year professional life, her winning percentage in 
singles AND doubles is 85%. In mixed doubles, it’s 87%. No matter who you are, 
no matter how high your ranking, if you step on the court and Serena is on the 
other side of the net, it’s very, very, very, very likely you’re going to lose. 
She has 22 Grand Slam singles titles from the biggest championships in her sport. 
She has 14 Grand Slam doubles titles. Six of those singles titles and two in doubles have come at the U.S. Open in New York, which starts Aug. 29.<o:p />
But these numbers -- as impressive as they are to the case 
that Serena, 34, is the greatest athlete of all time -- aren’t really the most 
compelling evidence.<o:p />

Here's the genius of Serena: She has shown that as long as you are passionate and competitive and want to metaphorically tear your opponent into tiny little pieces, you are the best. Everything else is noise, and that is the standard she alone can set.
Sure, she's had her bobbles recently - her recent lethargic performance in the Rio Olympics was baffling, and a reminder that she's human, not superhuman. But such is her reputation that the rare lousy tournament doesn't matter. You want to emulate her athletic prowess, but you also want her 
attitude and her bravery. According to reporters at her press conference after 
the Wimbledon semifinals this year, she elegantly shut down a question about being “one of the 
greatest female athletes of all time.” Her answer? “I prefer ‘one of the

critics time and time again. I am overwhelmed with how tiresome this must be 
for her -- and yet, the glory of Serena is that despite this, she revels in her 
life and her accomplishments.<o:p />
After Serena 
thoroughly clocked her best friend Caroline Wozniacki 6-3 6-3 in the finals of 
the 2014 U.S. Open, Wozniacki teased in her runner’s-up speech that Serena 
“definitely owed drinks later.” Fast forward to just past midnight, and we get

The Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games start tonight in Rio, and for those of us who live and breathe sports -- The triumphant highs! The gutting lows! Here is a primer on the six athletes to follow -- all ladies, because we adhere to the Book of Beyonce and girls run the world -- and the one event you should make sure to plant yourself in front of the TV to watch.

you -- finished first -- and all because she put on hold her smartypants career 
as a tax accountant to train fulltime. And she also offers up some big 
#lifegoals: Married in late 2014, her husband, Patrick, quit his job to cook 
and take care of her during her grueling travel schedule for competitions.

straightforward training plan was developed by Katie Ledecky, and do not play a 
drinking game for every time she is called the “female Michael Phelps” over the 
next few weeks because you will get quite toasty. The comparison isn’t entirely 
fair: Yeah, they both are up for five medals in Rio. But Ledecky’s dominance 
over her competitors -- let’s see if NBC can keep her in the same frame as her distant 
followers during the race -- is something that everyone should envy. So, you 
know, maybe start calling Phelps the male Ledecky.

that created a hole in her spine and paralyzed her from the waist down. She lived in a Russian 
orphanage until she was 6, when she was adopted by an American couple, Deborah 
McFadden and Bridget O’Shaughnessy. As part of Tatyana’s therapy, her parents 
introduced her to sports-- and discovered she was an unparalleled prodigy. 
McFadden has won the London, Boston, Chicago and New York marathons -- yes, all 
of them -- for three years in a row. It’s an astoundingly inspirational story -- you should be screaming your lungs out for McFadden to sweep all seven of her 
events at the Rio Paralympics.

and tenacious athlete. She began fencing at 13, was a three-time All-American 
at Duke University (where she got dual Bachelor’s degrees in International 
Relations and African and African-American Studies, no bigs) and then went on 
to train at the Peter Westbrook Foundation in New York, which teaches fencing 
to kids in underserved communities.

soccer-obsessed Brazilian fans. Best yet, the USWNT still has its own underdog 
story in the form of 18-year-old Mallory Pugh, who will be in Rio as the 
second-youngest player to ever make the Olympic squad. (It helped that she scored 
her first goal for the USWNT 24 minutes into playing her first game.) You go, 
girl.
