New on Blu-ray & DVD: January 22

Universal
Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena play hot-shot LAPD cops in End of Watch; Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman get steamy in The Paperboy; the amazing Oscar-nominated music doc Searching for Sugar Man and more in this week's new releases.

The Paperboy

Millennium Films
Director Lee Daniels' steamy and dramatic follow-up to the Oscar-nominated Precious is a real potboiler that concerns a reporter (Matthew McConaughey) and his brother (Zac Efron) who return to their Florida hometown to investigate a case involving a death row inmate (John Cusack) who may be wrongly convicted of murdering a sheriff. Nicole Kidman plays a woman who writes letters to death row inmates, and who first brings the case to the attention of the press.

End of Watch

Universal
Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena play hot-shot LAPD cops who unwittingly tangle with a deadly cartel in this intense film. Marked for death after confiscating a small cache of money and firearms, the pair finds themselves in the fight of their lives just to make it home to their loved ones at the end of the watch. Anna Kendrick and Natalie Martinez play the love interests of Jake and Michael, respectively, and America Ferrera also stars in the David Ayer film (director of Street Kings and writer of Training Day).

Searching for Sugar Man

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Now nominated for a Best Documentary Academy Award, the incredible true story of the '70 rock star that never was is now on DVD and Blu-ray! Swedish director Malik Bendjelloul tracks down the truth behind the story of the musician Sixto Rodriguez, whose music became bigger than Elvis during the anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa. A legendary figure who was said to have committed suicide on stage, it turns out that not only was Rodriguez alive and well, but completely oblivious to his fame and working construction in relative obscurity in Detroit. Searching for Sugar Man follows his promising origins and first musical failures, his growing mythic status and, finally, his triumphant comeback.

Also available is the Searching for Sugar Man original motion picture soundtrack with all songs by Rodriguez.

Tai Chi Zero

This steampunk-infused martial arts extravaganza, the first film in a planned trilogy, follows the residents of the legendary Chen Village, where everyone is a martial arts master. The villagers are forbidden to teach their Chen Style to outsiders, but when a man from the village's past returns with a frightening steam-powered machine and plans to build a railroad through the village, the villagers must put their faith in an outsider who has a secret power of his own.

Chris Hardwick: Mandroid

Paramount Home Entertainment
Nerdist Ambassador Chris Hardwick's first-ever Comedy Central stand-up special celebrates all things nerdy, from Captain Picard, Comic-Con and Quidditch to the cynical "Hipster Nerds" and sexual shut-downs of his awkward childhood. Featuring extended and uncensored material, the Mandroid DVD is a wonderland of comedy discovery – plus a "Totally Hidden Easter Egg"!

The Men Who Built America

Lionsgate
Meet the titans who forged the foundation of modern America --Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnegie, Morgan, Ford -- and created the American Dream. This amazing mini-series shines a spotlight on the influential builders, dreamers and believers whose feats transformed a post-Civil War nation into the greatest economic and technological superpower the world had ever seen.

Scarecrow & Mrs. King: The Complete Fourth Season

Warner Bros. Home Video
The fourth and final season of the '80s spy team is finally on DVD! Lovebirds Amanda King (Kate Jackson) and Lee "Scarecrow" Stetson (Bruce Boxleitner) are elite undercover experts solving The Agency's most dangerous cases. While planning a beautiful future together, their personal happiness is put on hold when a double-cross from within the ranks forces Lee into hiding from The Agency itself. Their last case will test their wits, will and hearts as their lives and love are on the line!
