Weekend Box Office

The ultra-stylish and bloody 300: Rise Of An Empire dominated the box office this weekend, leaving family friendly fare like the newly-released Mr. Peabody & Sherman and The LEGO Movie far behind.

This CGI-heavy sequel to the massively-successful 300 brought in an impressive $45 million domestically, which is a solid release, although far less than the original film's $70.9 million opening weekend. However, Rise of an Empire did snare an addition $87.8 million internationally bringing its world-wide opening take to $132.9 million, already surpassing its $110 million budget.

Starring the voice talents of Modern Family's Ty Burrell as Mr. Peabody and based off of a cartoon segment from the 1960s TV series The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, Mr. Peabody & Sherman found itself in second place with a better-than-expected $32.5 million haul. However, it is still a relatively small take when compared with the film's whopping $145 million budget.

Liam Neeson's action packed high flying thriller nabbed an additional $15.3 million, bringing it's domestic total to $52 million and surpassing it's $50 million budget. Non-Stop had lead the box-office last weekend but couldn't compete with the family-friendly Mr. Peabody or the blood-soaked 300.

The Warner Bros. powerhouse The LEGO Movie hung on in the fourth spot, scoring another $11 million to bring its domestic total to $224.9 million, based off of a $60 million budget.

This biblical retelling of the life and times of Jesus took in $10 million, bringing its total to $41.4 million.

This George Clooney-directed historical action drama nabbed $3.1 million, bringing it's total to $70.6 million, slightly above its $70 million budget.

Kevin Costner's action thriller managed to fight past lackluster reviews to stay in the top ten and earn another $3 million, bringing its total to $25.5 million, close to its $28 million budget.

Hanging on in the top ten, months after its release, this Oscar-winning Disney film earned another $3 million, increasing its massive total to $393 million domestically, and it's worldwide total past $1 billion.

This Best Picture Oscar winning took home $2.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $53.1 million.

Kevin Hart's Ride Along has managed to stay in the top ten longer than his later film About Last Night, and it picked up another $2 million, bring its total to $129.9 million off of a $25 million budget.

While Wes Anderson's new film only managed to secure $800,000, that take is also from a limited release in only four theaters nationwide, bringing its per-theater average to a staggering $200,000. It is expected that Fox Searchlight will expand the film's release to around 70 theaters next week.
