Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on Friday, bringing the beloved teenage witch back to the small screen for the first time since the Melissa Joan Hart-starring Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which ran from 1996-2000 on ABC, and then on The WB from 2000-03.
Mad Men's Kiernan Shipka stars as Sabrina Spellman on the new series, which was adapted from a comic book series of the same name by Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. While the Chilling Adventures is certainly a darker take on the story of Sabrina -- featuring bloody rituals, freaky familiars and a coven that worships the mysterious and menacing Dark Lord -- there are some recognizable names among the main characters, including Sabrina's aunts, Hilda and Zelda, as well as her mortal boyfriend, Harvey Kinkle.
"I'm happy to say that so far my expectations have been exceeded," Ross Lynch, who plays Harvey on Chilling Adventures, told ET prior to the premiere. "Just the aesthetic of everything and the actors that were cast and Roberto... all the visions are coming together."

First and foremost, the head witch in charge! Sabrina Spellman was embodied by Melissa Joan Hart on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, while Mad Men star Kiernan Shipka takes on the role on the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. While the tone of the shows are certainly different, both series kick off with Sabrina celebrating her 16th birthday and learning more about her witchy family history and developing powers.
Sabrina's devoted mortal boyfriend might be in the dark about her witchy secrets, but he's always a sweetly supportive guy, whether it's Nate Richert's portrayal of the character on Sabrina the Teenage Witch or Disney star Ross Lynch taking on the role on Chilling Adventures. However, the Netflix series dives deeper into Harvey's home life, exploring his connection to Greendale's mysterious mines and the town's historical witch hunters.
Zelda is the no-nonsense aunt, sterner and more rational than her sister, but just as devoted to raising Sabrina to be the best witch she can be. Beth Broderick played the role on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, while Chilling Adventures' Zelda -- who may have more than a few skeletons in her closet -- is portrayed by Lord of the Rings star Miranda Otto.
The more impulsive, fun-loving aunt, Hilda was played to zany perfection by Caroline Rhea on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Wonder Woman star Lucy Davis takes on the role on Chilling Adventures, providing a softer and sweeter -- if often tread upon -- counterpart to Otto's Zelda.
On Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Salem Saberhagen was a 500-year-old witch who was turned into a black cat because of his dastardly plans for world domination. While a black cat was used for some shots on the ABC/WB series, the scene-stealing Salem was primarily an animatronic puppet, voiced to sarcastic perfection by Nick Bakay. On Chilling Adventures, Salem is a familiar -- a goblin who has taken animal form "to better serve their witch masters," according to Aunt Zelda. While the new Salem may not have the same snark, he's sure to be a ferocious companion to Sabrina, in more ways than one.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch had many friends over the course of her show's seven-season run, including Jenny Kelley (Michelle Beaudoin), Valerie Birkhead (Lindsay Sloane), Roxie King (Soleil Moon Frye), and Morgan Cavanaugh (Elisa Donovan) -- as well as Harvey, of course. On Chilling Adventures, Sabrina has two besties -- Susie (Lachlan Watson) and Ros (Jaz Sinclair) -- as well as Harvey and her cousin, Ambrose (Chance Perdomo), to confide in.
Mystical Mean Girls
Even witches have to deal with mean girls! Sabrina the Teenage Witch's main character was confronted by the Fates, teenage goddesses responsible for the destinies of everyone on Earth, played by Sophia Bush, Jennifer Hall and Christina Vidal. But on Chilling Adventures, Sabrina is up against the far more sinister Weird Sisters -- Prudence (Tati Gabrielle), Agatha (Adeline Rudolph) and Dorcas (Abigail F. Cowen) -- who are hell-bent on making her life as a half-witch, half-mortal as excruciating as possible.
And a Sabrina series wouldn't be complete without a nosy principal poking around the supernatural circumstances happening in his halls! Martin Mull played Westbridge High's Willard Kraft on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, who not only antagonized Sabrina, but also had some flirtatious dalliances with Hilda and Zelda. On Chilling Adventures, Bronson Pinchot stars as the hard-nosed George Hawthorne, who immediately butts heads with Sabrina and her friends over their feminist club and banned book inquiries.
