"I didn't have any boyfriends in high school," Charlize tells Entertainment Tonight, explaining that her teenage years were filled with more unrequited crushes than she knew what to do with. One boy in particular holds an especially humiliating place in Charlize's high school memories as he never caught wind of her affections nor their plans to attend a school bash together.

"I had a massive, massive crush on this one guy. He was a couple of years older than me and I did not exist in his world. I was in a way like Mavis (her character in the film), so disillusioned in it that I thought he was going to ask me to this dance. So much so that I told my mom I needed a dress and she went and got me a dress for the dance … and it never happened."

On the flip side, the film's screenwriter Diablo Cody, who is best known for creating quirky characters with less than ideal high school experiences (Juno, Jennifer's Body), offers a surprisingly different story; She was crowned prom queen!

Remaining rather modest on the subject, Diablo says she was "just like Mavis" in that respect, however she doesn't equate her experience to the girls who usually receive the coveted honor. "The kids were kind of offbeat so it wasn't that much of a stretch for someone like me to be the prom queen," she explains. "At most American high schools the prom queen is the prettiest girl who has her nose in the air."
