The singer-songwriter did a favor for his pal, which led to him having a bag of medium-size underwear.
Now, this is a story of true friendship!
During a recent visit to Andy Cohen's SiriusXM channel, Radio Andy, John Mayer decided to share a little story that shed light on his close bond with rising star Shawn Mendes.
"Can I tell a click bait story?" he asked before adding, "This is a story that's designed for people to pick up and put in the press and put a headline, and the headline is 'How Shawn Mendes' Underwear Ended Up in John Mayer's Hotel Room.'"
The hitmaker explained that, a while back, he and Mendes were in the studio recording together when his protégé revealed that he was in dire need of new undies.
"He says, 'Do you think you could Postmates underwear? Could I Postmates underwear?' He said, 'I'm just, I'm out of underwear.' And I said, 'You don't have to Postmates underwear, man, I'll get you underwear.' So I had my assistant go out and get Shawn Mendes underwear. He's a size medium by the way… So there's a big bag of medium-sized boxer briefs for Shawn Mendes, and we finish the song and he leaves the studio and he doesn't take the underwear with him."
Mayer decided to take the bag back to his hotel so he could get the underwear to the 20-year-old crooner the next time he sees him.
"And they were in my hotel room for quite a while and I was like, 'That's for Shawn when I see him...' He got other underwear in the interim, but I was like, 'That's an interesting click bait story someday.'"
Clearly, the two are super close! Mendes previously spoke with ET about how Mayer went from being a hero of his to a dear friend.
"I had John Mayer to be able to tell me what not to do," he explained regarding the pitfalls of stardom. "He did it, so thank you. I mean, that's so cool of him. It's a crazy thing when your idols become your friends."
While on Radio Andy, Mayer also addressed those rumors that he's dating Kourtney Kardashian, stating, "Yeah, that turns out to not be true."
He went to explain that he likes the Kardashians, however, he suspects that this rumor began with the famous family.
"I've got to be honest with you, little suspicious about the origin of the story. I'm not sure the calls are not coming from inside the house on this one," he stated. "...I will say, if the call is coming from inside the house, it's diabolical and genius."
