After her performance, Carey accepted the prestigious Icon Award from presenter Jennifer Hudson, who was almost overcome with emotion as she handed the music legend the coveted trophy.
"Thank you, Billboard, for letting me grow up on the charts with you, and for this incredible honor," Carey said in her emotional acceptance speech.
"Without getting into all the drama, all the ups and downs in my career -- we've all seen them, we all make mistakes, there's been a few memes," Carey joked. "I guess I've always felt like an outsider, someone who doesn't feel like they belong anywhere."
"And I still feel like that lost interracial child who had a lot of nerve to believe I could succeed at anything at all in this world," she added. "But I did believe, because I had to."
The singer went on to thank her devoted fans, who she said are "unlike any other entity I have ever known"
"And to anyone who's ever told me that a song I wrote helped save your life, I thank you, because you saved mine," she added as her eyes welled up with tears. "And I'll be eternally grateful for that. I love you so much."
One of her biggest admirers appeared to be Taylor Swift, who cried during her medley and screamed "I love you" from the audience as Carey accepted the award.
