'Dirty Dancing' Remake In the Works

Lionsgate

You knew it would happen eventually. With Fame and Footloose in the can, Hollywood is now moving forward with a remake of the beloved Patrick Swayze-Jennifer Grey classic, Dirty Dancing.

High School Musical helmer Kenny Ortega will take on the task for Lionsgate Films, and he's perfectly suited for the task, as he served as the choreographer for the 1987 original and directed a pair of episodes of the short-lived Dirty Dancing TV series in '88.

Of course, Dirty Dancing follows Baby, a young woman who finds love and self-confidence in a Catskills summer retreat with her family after falling for a rebellious dancer, Johnny Castle.

The new version will incorporate songs from the original -- known for such hits as (I've Had) The Time of My Life, She's Like the Wind and Hungry Eyes -- as well as classic tunes from the '60s and new compositions.

Is a Flashdance remake next?
