Deadline reports that the Oscar winner has set up a deal to produce and possibly direct a new movie with Warner Bros. about Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee. Judah led a revolt in the second century B.C., joining with his father and four brothers to conquer the Greek-Syrian armies that had invaded Judea.

Mel has had experience handling this subject matter, having won a Best Director Academy Award for Braveheart where he played William Wallace, the leader of a Scottish rebellion.

The multi-hyphenated star will reportedly be joining forces with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct) for the project.
