Life of Pi follows Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma), the son of an Indian zookeeper who seeks refuge on a lifeboat after his freighter sinks, adrift alone in the Pacific in tight quarters with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Half-delusional with thirst and hunger, how can Pi survive his epic journey?

Tobey Maguire also stars as Yann Martel, the writer interviewing him; Gerard Depardieu plays The Chef, Tabu plays Pi's mother; and Irrfan Khan plays the adult Pi.

The highly anticipated project has sailed some very choppy seas to make it to the big screen. Directors M. Night Shyamalan, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Alfonso Cuaron were all involved with the adaptation of the Yann Martel bestseller at one point or another. Looking at the first trailer for the film, Ang Lee's interpretation could very well earn the filmmaker another Oscar nomination.

Life of Pi sails into theaters in 3D November 21.
