Anne Hathaway lost a shocking 25 pounds for her role as the dying prostitute Fantine in the upcoming film Les Miserables ... and it was far from easy. The actress describes the experience to Vogue magazine as a "state of deprivation - physical and emotional."

Hathaway detailed her weight loss, citing that she dropped 10 pounds before shooting by doing a strict cleanse. Then during a two-week break, she lost another 15 pounds by going on an intense, "near starvation" diet that consisted of two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day. "I had to be obsessive about it - the idea was to look near death," she told Vogue. "Looking back on the whole experience - and I don't judge it in any way - it was definitely a little nuts."

The actress, who also cut her hair for the role, said that the part was so consuming that it took over her personal life as well. "I was in such a state of deprivation - physical and emotional. When I got home, I couldn't react to the chaos of the world without being overwhelmed. It took me weeks till I felt like myself again."

Thankfully, her new husband Adam Shulman was by her side. "He gets what I do and who I am and supports me in it, and that's pretty awesome."

She adds, "It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that's who Fantine is anyway."

Hathaway is joined by Amanda Seyfried, Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter and Hugh Jackman (to name a few) in the musical movie Les Miserables, hitting theaters Dec. 25.
