Meet the China Doll of 'Oz the Great and Powerful'
By David Weiner
Oz the Great and Powerful was a big hit at the box office and inspired a lot of imaginations along the way. Now, in anticipation of the Disney film's Blu-ray Combo Pack and Digital release on June 11, kid reporter Lauren Kaplan pulls back the curtain on the movie to find out how they brought that memorable China Doll character to life!
Lauren sits down with Joey King, the 12-year-old star whose voice and movements bring the characters to life, plus the special effects wizards behind the magic of the film, including Sony Pictures Imageworks Sr. Visual Effects Supervisor Scott Stokdyk and animators Carolyn Vale and Michael Kimmel.
The fantastical Oz the Great and Powerful imagines the origins of author L. Frank Baum's beloved Wizard of Oz, with James Franco as Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician and flimflam man with dubious ethics. Hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he first thinks he's hit the jackpot -- until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting.
Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil and put his own magical talents to the test to transform himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz, but a better man as well.
