One Direction has been in the news all week following the premiere of their movie One Direction: This Is Us in London and after it was revealed that band member Zayn Malik is engaged. The pop band made news again on Friday when they broke at attendance record by performing for more than 18,000 fans for the Today show.

"This is the biggest crowd we've ever had, so we don't want to keep these people waiting any longer," Matt Lauer told screaming onlookers before One Direction launched into their hit What Makes You Beautiful. The NYPD estimated the number of fans, which were spread over two blocks surrounding New York's Rockefeller Center.

More than 1,000 of the fans -- including one teen in a wedding dress who said she wanted to propose to Harry Styles -- waited in line for up to a week for a chance to watch the group perform.

The group -- which is nominated and will be attending Sunday's MTV Video Awards -- talked about the goal of their new 3D flick. "We wanted to really give (fans) behind-the-scenes access," said Niall Horan. "It's also about our families as well, the way they deal with us being away from home," Liam Payne added.

As for Zayn's engagement news, he didn't provide many details, other than to say that he and his fiance, Perrie Edward from the British girl band Little Mix, "are really happy."
