Nick Jonas
received some unexpected help when he sat down to work on his newest solo album: Kingdom co-star Jonathan Tucker.

Jonas had just split from his longtime girlfriend, model Olivia Culpo, in June 2015, and needed an outlet to express the varying emotions he was feeling at the time. His colleague and friend became an invaluable outlet for the 23-year-old to channel his heartbreak.

“When you’re an actor, you end up opening yourself up very quickly and very frankly with people who you are in a relationship [with] onscreen,” Tucker told ETonline of his professional relationship with Jonas on the DirecTV MMA drama.

“Nick plays my brother [on Kingdom] and I feel very connected to him, as such. And he went through -- as he named his album -- a very complicated year,” the 34-year-old actor explained.

Tucker’s friendship and bond with Jonas proved indispensable and the two found themselves working together on a song, “Champagne Problems,” which is featured on Jonas’ new album, Last Year Was Complicated.

“We talked quite a bit about some of those issues that he was wrestling with and some of those issues came into that song,” Tucker said.

“It’s one of the great highlights of my life as a completely non-musical person to be involved, in a small way, on his new album,” he added.

Jonas revealed in March during a Reddit AMA that “Champagne Problems” is “about sharing a bottle of champagne with my now ex as we were breaking up, to kind of close that chapter,” he wrote. “It was sad and slightly sweet at the same time. It was a range of emotions and feelings and I think this song, although it sounds like a party song, actually has some of the deepest lyrics on the record.”

It won’t be the only song giving fans a deeper look into Jonas’ psyche following his breakup with Culpo.

“I made a real point to tell stories as honestly as I could,” Jonas told OUT magazine for its summer issue. “It became very clear what it was going to be about, after the breakup. I just dove in headfirst and wrote about all of it. I think it was the most meaningful relationship I’ve ever been it, and it was the longest.”

It certainly helps to have a friend like Tucker put pen to paper.
