'Taxi' Star Jeff Conaway Dies

Jeff Conaway, the '70s star best known for the hit series "Taxi" as well as his role in the movie musical 'Grease,' passed away today in Los Angeles. He was 60 years old.

Conaway starred as the greaser Kenickie in the 1978 film adaptation of 'Grease' alongside John Travolta and Olivia Newton John (and he also starred in the original Broadway production of the musical). That same year, Conaway joined the cast of the television show "Taxi," playing the role of Bobby Wheeler, but left after three seasons. He also starred as Zach Allan in the sci-fi show "Babylon 5" and also appeared on "Celebrity Fit Club."

ET confirms that Conaway died at 10:30 am in a Los Angeles hospital. His sisters were by his side. Earlier this month he was found unconscious in his L.A. home. He was taken off life support on Thursday.

Conaway had battled addiction for many years. He had endured several back surgeries stemming from an accident on the set of 'Grease,' and as a result became dependent on the pain killers. Conaway later made appearances on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" where he attempted to deal with his addiction to prescription pain killers.

In response to Conaway's passing, Dr. Drew Pinsky released a statement saying "There is no evidence showing Jeff died from an overdose. This was aspiration with overwhelming pneumonia and sepsis. Jeff is another example of a pharmaceutical death from the overutilization of prescription drugs. Please continue to pray for his friends and family. They appreciate your support."

'Grease' co-star Travolta also commented on Conaway's passing, saying "Jeff Conaway was a wonderful and decent man and we will miss him. My heartfelt thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this very difficult time."
